Creo que este es el mayor mito de todos: que en una biblioteca solo se trabaja con libros. Como parte del gremio, debemos dedicarnos a la difusión de nuestro trabajo diario, que va mucho más allá de los libros y de hacer silencio a los usuarios. Ser bibliotecario es un trabajo hermoso que incluye ser creativo, hacer marketing para la biblioteca, mejorar o desarrollar servicios, tener habilidades de docencia para formar a los usuarios, mantenerse actualizado para enseñar nuevas tecnologías y herramientas, saber de atención al cliente en la sección de referencia, y mi parte favorita, saber de programación porque siempre se necesitan sistemas para apoyar el trabajo.

Many people believe that libraries are just a place to check out books and read in silence. While these activities are still largely welcomed, most libraries have grown to more closely resemble community centers, offering a wide variety of materials and programming. At any given point in time, you may come across babies and preschoolers enjoying storytime, kids creating art projects or learning how to code, adults applying for jobs or enjoying a engaging lecture, ESL speakers meeting for a conversation group, video game tournaments, writing contests, the list goes on and on. Libraries are one of the few remaining community spaces where one can spend time without spending any money and are therefore valuable to the communities they serve.

Some common misconceptions: Annual wages for us are very low but we won’t consider the pay instead we are helping others access information and promoting lifelong learning. Nowadays we are not custodians of books but we teach digital literacy, patron for library resources. It is a dynamic field where adaptability, creativity, and a passion for helping others.

There are so many myths about the profession which are misleading.....one that I have personally experienced quite often is the thought that it is just about arranging books in the library. It should be noted that there is a lot more in library service provision and the myths demystified. Many other myths should be clarified to enable anyone who wishes to pursue the profession to have a clear understanding.

The librarian is one of the most versatile professionals there is. We work not only with books but with information and knowledge in different types of media. It's a myth that this profession will be replaced or extinguished. But it is true that professionals need to innovate and work in different areas, not just libraries.

While English or Literature degrees would certainly serve you well in a library environment, it's more important for librarians to know how to access new information through a variety of methods. In the United States most librarians are required to hold a Master's degree in Library Science or Information Science, however their undergraduate degrees are often from a wide variety of different academic backgrounds. Additionally, many other library employees do not necessarily need a related degree in order to obtain and be successful in a library career. And a wide variety or diversity of backgrounds can only be an asset to a library that strives to serve a diverse community.

Today's librarians need to be constantly up-to-date, especially when it comes to technology and new ways of better serving users. So characteristics such as empathy, adaptability and proactivity are essential for these professionals to succeed in their careers.

Having a degree in a less represented field can be an asset, especially at an academic library field where the demand is higher than the supply- such as the natural sciences. Plus taking many classes in many subjects is extremely beneficial for public librarianship, since collections are so diverse and customers have such varied needs.

Transitioning to a career in Library Services often comes with misconceptions, such as the belief that it’s a monotonous job centered only around shelving books. In reality, modern librarians engage in a diverse range of activities including curating collections, developing educational programs, and using technology to support information literacy. By embracing continuous learning and adapting to the evolving needs of their communities, library professionals play a crucial role in fostering knowledge and providing resources, making it a dynamic and fulfilling career choice.

In Brazil specifically, if a person wants to be a librarian, they need to do a four-year degree course. Whereas in other countries you only need a postgraduate degree or specialization, for example. Technical knowledge is crucial, but we mustn't forget the person's profile too.

With the advancement of technology, the profession of librarian has been questioned a lot. Many professionals from the analogue era felt threatened by the advancement of technology, especially with regard to information retrieval. However, over the years, we realized that the librarian profession will not be replaced by technology, as human competence will always be necessary to curate information as well as identify fidelity and reliability of this information. Technology exists to facilitate and speed up the information retrieval process, but it will never replace the human and specialized factor of a librarian.

The role of the librarian goes far beyond providing information to the user. Many public libraries, for example, already have a specific sector to support these neediest people and the librarian acts as an intermediary in these cases. Information and knowledge empower human beings. In this way, the librarian acts as an essential agent to be able to collaborate with changes in these people's lives.

A common misconception is that all librarians are introverted book lovers. While this may be true for some, librarianship has grown to encompass folks from all walks of life, with interests as varied as they are. Librarians serve an important role in bringing their communities together through engaging library programming, materials, and events that patrons connect and resonate with. Community members should be able to see themselves reflected in the offerings of their library. With a more diverse staff, libraries can ensure they are reaching out to as many community members as possible and providing them with impactful and engaging opportunities.
