There are several aspects of running a nonprofit that share characteristics with both for-profit companies and government agencies. An important one is to complete tasks in an effective time frame that meets external customer needs/desires and organizational requirements for safety, budget, and quality. Methods to accomplish this are similar across most, if not all, organizations. By framing a conversation with this focus, many causes of friction among members of the organization become much easier as we are focusing on "the system" rather than individuals. It is important to remember that the individuals working for the nonprofit are interested in doing a good job. Keeping this in mind and treating people with respect goes a long way.

Before a difficult conversation with your nonprofit boss, preparation is essential. As the owner of Smart Start Learning Center, I found preparation key. For instance, when transitioning our daycare into a nonprofit, I gathered financial reports, strategic plans, and market analysis data, anticipating board questions and rehearsing responses. To address financial viability concerns, I prepared a detailed forecast with projected expenses, funding sources, and case studies of successful transitions. This thorough preparation demonstrated my commitment and professionalism. Being well-prepared shows respect for your boss’s time and builds credibility. This will give your position credibility. 2 - anticipate their reaction. You will then be ready to answer any questions they might have and potentially offer solutions to the problems they point out. 3 - create a list of items you're prepared to compromise on. Maybe you need more support on your team, but there isn't enough funding for a full-time hire. Provide alternatives like a virtual assistant or intern. Preparation shows thoughtfulness & respect.

Good leaders are often squeezed for time and brain-space, and also looking to develop leadership and problem-solving skills in others. Bringing a solution with your request is a great start, and offering to organize or implement the solution is even better. To totally seal the deal, do a little research beforehand about previous efforts to address similar issues and why they did or didn't succeed, and gather input from others in the organization. You don't just want to propose a solution, you want to propose the right solution.

Come prepared with potential solutions to the issues at hand. When discussing operational challenges, I always presented well-thought-out proposals, backed by data and aligned with our strategic objectives, which demonstrated proactive problem-solving. This not only shows initiative but also helps steer the conversation toward constructive outcomes. By presenting viable solutions, you demonstrate your commitment to resolving the issues and moving the organization forward.

I use this strategy whenever I face a problem at work. I have found that you become a great team player when you can not only identify problems at work but also offer solutions. Nonprofit managers and leaders already have so much on their plate, and by coming to them with both the problem AND the solution, it allows them to drop that mental load and focus their time and attention on other matters. Trust me, they appreciate that! Bonus, in my experience, I have found that this then showcases your leadership and problem-solving abilities to your leadership, helping you to stand out as a leader for your program or organization.

After the conversation, I ensure to follow up with a summary of what was discussed, agreed upon actions, and timelines. This helps in maintaining accountability and ensuring that progress is tracked, which was essential during our pivot to online learning programs. Following up reinforces the commitments made during the discussion and keeps everyone aligned on the next steps.

I'm not going to lie. This is one of the most important steps, but it is also the hardest one to do, especially if you are a recovering people pleaser. In the beginning of my career, I found this step hard to do because it feels like you are gearing up for conflict later, which is potentially true. But, done correctly without judgment or hostility, following up with an objective summary of the discussion is incredibly valuable. It helps create accountability, boundaries, and timelines that will help maintain a healthy work relationship.
