As a professional in charge of a library’s information resources and inventory, libraries everyday operations, and eligible visitors to access and use the library, I like to unite with educators and faculty to merge information literacy skills into the curriculum. I like to recommend the importance of information literacy in student learning and research. I like to teach essential digital literacy skills to prepare patrons for success in a digital world. I can nurture vibrant communities of learners and creators by enriching digital collaboration and communication skills.

Discussion can help learners think critically about their information literacy. When I was an instructional librarian at a university and conducted information literacy seminars, I incorporated a discussion part into the workshop. I asked students to share their reflections on their search, including the search process, the materials they got, how to assess the resources, and what they found difficult, and give feedback to other group members. This activity helps them reflect on their searches objectively, encourages them to think without bias by communicating with peers, and improves critical thinking skills. The discussion activity secondarily helps enhance the engagement of the seminar.

Instructional librarians should teach concepts that can be applied to various situations to help learners’ lifelong learning rather than simply mechanics such as which button to click. In terms of information searching, one of the key information literacy skills, learners should ideally be able to search databases effectively, even if they are using them for the first time. For example, understanding search techniques such as boolean operators can help when searching various databases.
