The article appears to follow an algorithm that would be applicable in many situations. Other topics could be "You're working as a scrub tech in an operating room and the robotic arm malfunctions...." "You're a grunt worker in a weapons system factory and ...." You get the idea! The article should reflect the real world situations. It should somehow incorporate real brains, real expertise, real experience. There is a section at the end to rate the article. However, there is no mechanism to provide actual comments. It's multiple choice.

This is not good advice. If you are a regular worker and the machine breaks down, you should always call maintenance or your superior. Unless you are trained how to fix the problem or have special skills (like a degree in mechanical engineering) don´t try to fix it yourself. I have seen often when workers in a good intent tried to fix things, but in the long run it only made things worse. One time top the point where we had to readjust the complete line because there where so many quick fixes that did not solve the problem When maintenance is at the line, then it is vital that the worker is giving important information like what happened, does it happen more then once, ideas how to solve it and so on

Assessing the problem is great, but unless it is a repetitive issue that maintenance and engineering has seen and instructed me how to resolve, I would not make a corrective action without notifying those who know more than me. Observing and informing those responsible for resolving equipment issues would be my responsibility, but knowing my limitations could avoiding hurting someone or damaging the equipment far more than the lost downtime.

No matter how small or big the problem might be it is always the best and important way to make an assessment on the issue first. With thorough analysis you can find out whether it’s a minor problem which just need a quick fix or something that requires an extensive evaluation before you can work on them. There are some problems that you might not have an idea on how to get it done but by assessment, you can have an idea of doing further research before solving it. Technically an assessment is the best method to use first when a problem occurs.

The statement for number 2 seems to say it all. I might make suggestions/observations but following the SOP is the best course of action.

To my knowledge following the SOP is the best way to go about it . Because it has all the procedures and processes to follow. And it’s the best in offering remedies.

I just want to say thank you for taking into consideration SOP in problem solving when it comes to break down. Much can’t be said but the little I can say is, one is supposed to abide and familiarize themselves with the SOP which is of a good help as a technical person.

Taking care of oneself and those around you should be an ongoing thing, not categorized to a ranking list of things to do. If it seems overwhelming, one of the toughest things to do is acknowledge it and ask for help. Who that is may be the toughest decision. You would hope and should be able to expect that the person is your next in line supervisor, but I would evaluate that closely.

One of the best traits I have seen in employees is seeking something productive to do when their main job has been stopped for some reason. If you don't know of something, asking before being told makes you stand out in a positive way. It could be compared to the soldier who volunteers for the tough jobs. Management can't help but appreciate and reward folks like that.
