Building trust and rapport with your clients doesnât happen overnight, and it certainly doesnât happen in one encounter.
It happens over time with every single interaction.
From how you position yourself in your communication, in being their strategic partner, in leveraging your skills and resources to help them solve problems, and in your ability to get in the trenches with them.
When youâve done what you can, you engage them along each step and ask them what else they need.
You give consistently and of accountability and responsibility for taking action and committing to help them solve their problems and realize the expected outcomes.

Building trust is not just about being transparent and honest, there are other elements that can build trust, though honesty is a given. My personal take is that the word trust consist of three elements: 1. Being Competent in your craft and staying abreast on issues and synthesizing issues that your client is facing. 2. Intention - what is the outcome that you are looking at and it should not be the just the short game on building your consulting billables, the focus should be on making sure that your client succeed so that a long term relationship is established and developed. 3. Reliability, this element is perhaps the most critical to build the long game with your client.

Building trust requires transparency and honesty from Day 1. I just had a call with a client, and we discussed managing expectations. That is the goal of every engagement I have with a client. What is the motive behind the consulting engagement? What do they consider success? Alignment and realignment are a constant part of my work with clients. Documentation is key, and showing your work is also crucial. Conversations are great, but alignment on the written word is required for successful relationships. As well as holding each other accountable for their deliverables. These are some of the critical elements in building and maintaining trust.

Trust is built through consistent transparency. To ensure transparency and honesty in client interactions, itâs essential to be clear from the start about objectives, expectations, and potential challenges. In my experience, regularly updating clients on progress, both successes and setbacks, creates a strong relationship. It's also crucial not to overpromise and to be honest when unforeseen issues arise. With open communication and a solution-oriented approach, you ensure that trust grows over time.

Trust is earned! If you want to be trusted, then you have to be trustworthy. Over time, people see through beautiful words. Trust isnât about good intentions; it is about actions. Say what you are going to do and do it. Take responsibility when things go wrong.
