Don’t be afraid to ask questions, admit your mistakes, and seek feedback from your team and peers.

2 Know your team

Your team is composed of individuals with different backgrounds, skills, personalities, and motivations. To earn their respect, you need to show genuine interest and appreciation for their work and their perspectives. Learn about their strengths, weaknesses, goals, and preferences. Communicate with them regularly and openly, and listen to their ideas and concerns. Respect their autonomy and expertise, and avoid micromanaging or undermining them. Involve them in decision-making and problem-solving, and give them opportunities to grow and learn.

3 Know your domain

As a manager in telecommunications systems, you need to have a solid grasp of the technical aspects of your domain, such as the hardware, software, protocols, and standards involved in designing, installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting various types of networks and systems. You don’t need to know everything, but you need to know enough to communicate effectively with your team and stakeholders, and to evaluate the quality and feasibility of your team’s work. You also need to keep up with the latest trends, innovations, and best practices in your field, and encourage your team to do the same.

5 Know your limits

As a new manager in a technical role, you may feel overwhelmed by the demands and expectations of your position. You may also feel tempted to prove yourself by taking on more work, responsibilities, or challenges than you can handle. However, this can backfire and damage your reputation and relationships. You need to know your limits, and be realistic and honest about what you can and cannot do. You also need to delegate effectively, prioritize wisely, and balance your workload and time. And most importantly, you need to take care of yourself, and seek help and support when you need it.
