In my last role, I navigated the organization of media licenses by developing a system using Microsoft Forms and Power Automate to track usage terms and expirations so that just by archiving projects, we would simultaneously build out a database that we could reference any time we received questions about rights. From there, I set Teams calendar notifications to ensure that we were addressing expirations as they came up.

To handle the complexity of navigating media production licenses, Iâd start by thoroughly researching the legal and regulatory requirements specific to the projectâs location and scope. Collaborating with legal experts ensures compliance and minimizes risks. Iâd organize licenses into categories (e.g., music, footage, location) and maintain a detailed timeline to track application processes and renewal dates. Utilizing project management tools or dedicated software streamlines documentation and deadlines. Clear communication with stakeholders about licensing constraints avoids missteps. By staying proactive, detail-oriented, and well-informed, Iâd effectively manage the maze of licenses while keeping the production on track.

In my current organisation, I handle complexity by identifying the root cause of the problem. Clearing the loopholes of the syndrome and adjusting the tempo, offering sets of deliverables qualifying high TAT will be helping to clear complexities. Defining a topic while drafting releases, with the concurrent issues that enables draw attention of the public and the content becomes more relatable and flexible. Media production licenses can be worked upon creating a dynamic framework with user-friendly content and universal acceptable that fills the gap in the demand-supply graph is always suitable & beneficial to the production of the event.

If we learn from our mistakes - I'm due for a degree! With a little research, music rights were easy. Appearance and location releases were more challenging, keeping up with the paperwork for a 4 one-hour series, but manageable. Video stock however, became a real challenge. Sourcing user generated content for hurricanes, tornados, floods and droughts took me TikTok, Facebook reels and YouTube shorts. Really hard to get responses from people. Plan b was to look at companies like Jukmedia, who charge a fortune. Plan C was to explore fair use. These choices go along side the standard stock libraries that work for standard b roll. The solution, as always, is solved with enough budget to hire the experts and have adequate pre-prod.
