For example computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is prohibited from being used to develop wind loads in buildings per AISC and NBC. Instead these codes require the use of boundary layer wind tunnel testing. According to the codes the wind tunnel test results should be used to develop the static loads applied in FEA model. CFD can still play a role in the design process as an estimation tool. It is not always practical to create multiple design concepts and perform wind tunnel testing on each concept. CFD can be used to evaluate the performance of different concepts to help the design team select a design concept to perform wind tunnel testing on.
