I had a mentor who gave me a brilliant question to ask (and it has garnered many positive comments from recruiters!). "What would you tell your best friend about this job that you wouldn't tell a candidate?" Most of the time I have interviewers let me know about some of the politics, unreasonable demands, or will become very nervous about the question- which is telling in and of itself. For me, this is the most common and the most frustrating trait in applicants who are unsuccessful in an interview situation. Personally, I have found asking the question ‘I hope I have given you the information you need - if I haven’t, do let me give more information’ a useful tool when being interviewed to ensure the interviewer feels I have answered the question clearly.

Active listening is imperative, not just in interviews but for working in general. 1. Always answer precisely to the point of the question. Do not add anything more since no one is interested in wasting their time on unnecessary things. 2. Keep your answers short and crisp. 3. If you do not know the answer, please tell them you do not know the answer now but will be able to get the answer later. This shows you are honest and willing to learn.

Asking questions is an opportunity for you to gauge whether the role is right for you, and further demonstrate your understanding of the sector. Asking questions for the sake of doing so wastes both yours and the hiring manager’s time. Instead, take your time to consider questions that give you the chance to understand if the business is right for you, and where your role could go. Equally, questions around the business and its future show an interest on your part, and depending on how the question is framed, it can demonstrate an awareness of the wider impact your role could have.

People often forget that its not a one-way interview, you're also there to assess if this is the right fit for you. There are many aspects of a job or company that is not present in the job application or online, go prepared with questions about things that matter to you so that you can get the best out of your time investment.

Steer clear of asking overly basic, personal, or negative questions. Instead, focus on inquiries that provide insights into the role, team dynamics, and your potential contributions.

Although you are in the interview for the prospective role, they are also in the interview to be your prospective employer.
