Struggling to stay engaged and motivated in a late career is not uncommon but remember that it's never too late to make changes and find renewed purpose and fulfillment in your work. By taking proactive steps to stay engaged and motivated, you can continue to thrive and make meaningful contributions throughout your late career and beyond. Take some time to reflect on your values, interests, and career goals. Consider what aspects of your work are most meaningful and fulfilling, and how you can align your current role with those values and goals.

Late career motivation? I have not come to a late-career yet, but I have seen my teachers, mentors, and advisors do the following: Identify transferrable skills and channel evolving passions: Example one: An engineer who had been in the government for nearly three decades moved full-time into philosophical debates in his 50s. He spent nearly two decades in that space. Now in his 70s, he moved into the workplace ethics movement. Example two: A leader of a Global Think Tank, after retirement, started a publishing company in the 70s to give voice to fresh ideas in niche areas for human flourishing and transformation. For both, their most recent assignment was the culmination of previous experiences, network, and credibility.

Be honest with yourself. This is the first step. Many people are not honest about the relationships they are in/ the job they are in and stay unhappy. This is about raising your awareness. Work out the work you love and the work you don't align to and so more of what you love. We work so many hours of our day we must invest valuable time into work that has meaning so having a higher level and sense of purpose is a non-negotiable. Seek advice and support from a mentor who can help and guide you in the right way. We are the average of those we spend time with and we must be in the right environment for success.

Building on what Natalie has said, it is essential to understand where the discomfort originates. Is it a personal or physical matter, like family issues or depression? Is it a toxic work environment? Only after that assessment can you make a sound decision about how to proceed. If depression has robbed you of your joy and engagement, for example, moving to a new position will not change things for very long. Sometimes it is easier to blame disengagement on one circumstance or the other but a deep examination is crucial to reversing the situation.

Usually lack of motivation in current career is because you’re not interested in the work at all. A couple ideas that have helped some folks: 1) researching and discovering a side passion which can reignite energy to help stay engaged in current job 2) do job shadows or informational interviews at other departments in same company that you may be interested in to try and pivot towards new opportunity 3) take classes, internship (or go back to school) to be a competitive candidate in the new field you want to pursue

What do you want? People talk of motivation and it is beyond this. Discipline is everything but you have to have clarity on what you are working towards. A personal focus I have is that each day I must feel a genuine feeling and sense that life is in forward motion. Ask yourself what is the life you want to create and ask are you being, doing, saying, thinking and feeling aligned towards the vision. Yes there is always discussions to be had around options but the pre requisite is to understand what life would ideally look like and this may hep to offer ideas of the different ways you can attain this.

Mentors in life are key. An interesting piece of research I did recently saw many people see mentors as free when I have invested tens of thousands in mentors. Be specific on the gaps you want help on and how to be supported. Be open to feedback and if this feels like failure, it is vital to reframe this and change the way you see things. Be around people who challenge you to think and see things differently. It comes from knowing first of all what you want and then asking for it without fear of rejection. If you don't ask, you don't get.

Gratitude is everything in life. Realising what you have now brings perspective. We can always be focused on the next goal/ job/ idea. But this is futile if you cannot fall in love with a process and be able to measure progress. One tangible thing I focus on is a folder/ book/ box where I store and keep success milestones. Not only do this offer a moment to ground in seeing things differently particularly in challenging times but they help us keep focus. When are energy state is positive/ focussed and our minds are clear we respond differently. We are more creative and open to change which is key.

What's the impact you want to have? Knowing you are giving your best everyday to feel and be in forward motion is an important focus to have when building a business/ leading a team or growing personally as well as professionally. We have to have a strong vision to drive this action. Then ensure behaviour is aligned to strong values. These together will yes keep you focussed on the long term but be grateful for the moment. Legacy - only sits well for me if it means leaving a positive impact in this world for our future generations.

Consider embracing the opportunity to explore new passions or hobbies outside your career. Shift your focus towards personal fulfillment instead of relying on professional achievements alone for motivation. Additionally, reassess your goals and consider transitioning into a role that aligns better with your current interests and aspirations.

Don't be afraid to reach out for support if you're struggling. Talk to a trusted colleague, mentor, or counselor about your feelings and concerns, and explore potential solutions together. Finally, maintain a positive attitude and remain flexible in your approach to your career. Recognize that it's normal to experience ups and downs, and be patient with yourself as you navigate through periods of transition and change.
