Why are they not running smoothly? Is there an issue between cast members? Is it the production team? Is it scheduling? If you are an actor, have you discussed your concerns with the director? Are the director and producer(s) on the same page? Communication is essential since theater is such a collaborative process. By the time you get from rehearsals to performance, whatever the problems are should have been resolved by that point.

As a performer, I would first go to the Equity Deputy, if it is an Equity production, to see if there can be a resolution. If nothing happens I will contact the Equity Reps at Actors Equity.

Communication is the key in this step. Often, a breakdown in communication is the main reason that something has gone astray, and it is important to resolve this as early as possible in the process. Meeting with the whole team to assess different viewpoints and opinions allows everyone to be on the same page and for possible collaborative solutions to arise. Recently, our team met to discuss what was causing a slower than desired pace in the tech room, and by meeting together, we found that it was a breakdown in communication and a misunderstanding of protocol. If anyone had a further question or discussion they wanted to have with a specific team member, or members, they pulled them aside during this time to resolve further issues.

Get to get aware of the discompass...Mostly this kind of problem shows up durring long term rehearsels or apresentations. Keeping an heterdox group of people working togheter, even if they are keen to each other, is difficult. To keep groups of ppl working togheter, maintening the same freshness, is always exaustive. One need to administrate personal relations so that they get be be permanently anew at the scene.

Taking some time away from the stress of getting everything right can also help hugely. An over the top speed run can be a great morale boost. If you tell them not to worry about the lines but get through the story while exaggerating things, we often find that they know more than they realised and have so much fun doing it that the pressure that had been building up is released and rehearsals are able to continue from a much higher point than where they were left.

In my experience, it is not the right approach to hold workshops at this time. If things aren't going well in rehearsals, that's a completely normal process; you should trust that the theatre has the strength to pull everything together well for good performances. If, however, it is due to interpersonal problems, think about finding the person in the cast who is causing trouble and talking to them calmly. Give the whole cast a day or two and go for a walk with the trouble shooter, talk, talk, talk, and explain your ideas of a noble theatre production. After two days, bring the team back together, get to know each other again and try to work well together. If it doesn't work out again, the whole team should decide together how to proceed.

Professor Dr Thomas Schmidt brings wisdom in his comments, I would re-read them if I were in a negative rehearsal. Let me add that you have to define what it means that a rehearsal is 'no going smoothly'. Is it just that it is not going according to YOUR expectations? Sometimes the cast and crew are just letting off steam and managing stress in a way that does not fit YOUR idea of the moment. Breathe and let the moment pass. When the time is right make sure YOU are acting in a manor that reflects strong teamwork behavior and that YOU are focused on the vision of the show and the team!

Understanding the limits of your team is vital. Creating impossible goals and demanding results is a sure fire way of causing unrest within your team. This doesn’t mean that you should be afraid of setting stretch targets. This is a great way of pushing the boundaries of your team but, you must be able to see how those targets can be reached.

As part of the Professional Training Program that I am currently participating in, we are encouraged to request additional trainings if we feel we are not at the desired skill level. During a recent tech process, supervisors saw a need for additional programming under a time constraint experience and training. Not only will this help our design interns grow their skill set, it will also shorten the amount of work time needed on notes given in the moment and will speed up the tech process.

Taking time as a technical crew to talk through the production sections such as scene changes and complex Qing without the cast present is a vital step in ensuring the smooth running of a technical rehearsal. Fully understanding these challenges and mastering them before a technical run speeds up the process and doesn’t keep a cast onstage for hours just waiting around. This helps keep everyone’s moral up. Things do go wrong, put putting in the proper planning is the key.

I always like to speak using praise, then what they need to work on, and then more praise. I encourage everyone to refrain from participating in backstage drama and leave all of the drama, energy, and emotions on the stage.

Don't talk so much about morals and dignity, but show your team your respect and you own moral and dignity towards them all. Then you will become the role model they need at that tricky moment and you will succeed in motivating everyone as much as possible.

Sometimes it is difficult to maintain morale when things are not going to plan. It is important to remember that it is not one person's fault if the process is not running smoothly, but they might be blaming themselves regardless. Recognizing everyone's individual contributions while speaking to the larger process helps keep everyone focused on the overall goal but acknowledges that you appreciate their hard work.

As I read the comments of Dr Thomas Schmidt below I am encouraged. At the risk of hubris I would like to add .. We are doing theater ... Let people off the hook more easily. Yes we want to do well but we are not in a life and death business. We are given a great opportunity to bring out the best in the human condition. We should remember our own humanity as we work and treat others with patience. Take a step back and really give thought to whether the rehearsal is not going smoothly or does the team need a moment to vent? Be nice and focus on THEM more than the production ... they will work harder on the vision if you do.

Consider directing from a coaching lens: Start with asking the cast (and crew if you are already working with tech) what IS going well. Celebrate the good. Ask individuals to identify what they feel they are doing well and to articulate the reasons behind their success in those areas. How do their successes impact the production as a whole? Then ask individuals to identify the challenges they are facing and to consider: what steps they need to take to overcome the challenges, what supports they might need to accomplish their goals, and the ways in which overcoming those challenges will have a positive impact on the production as a whole.
