Setting goals is critical as without a goal, you do not know where you want to get to. You need a strong alignment and linkage between your long term, midterm and short term goals. Having a BHAG, Big Hairy Audacious Goal that is aligned with your purpose and values must be the starting point. This should be a 10 to 30 year goal, it will be your “North Star” The next step is to creat a three year highly achievable goal that moves you towards your BHAG. Your three year goal should include a clear statement that everyone can understand and buy into. Next create a 1 year plan with financial and non-financial numbers. This will drive your actions down to a quarterly and even daily level. Now what you do daily actually links to that BHAG

I'm a big fan of SMART goals. I also enjoy sharing with my clients the "SMARTER" version. Adding, two components: Exciting and Rewarded, rounds out the goal setting exercise and helps leaders decide if this goal is something worth doing by answering the questions: 1. Will my employees enjoy accomplishing it and 2. is the goal so important that I'm willing to reward employees for achieving the goal.

For the past years, I've been using a 360-degree process to kick-start this by first asking my client stakeholders how they perceive my client because that influences a lot how we can go about it. Otherwise, goals are often very self-focused and don't necessarily shift the perception of the person in the organization.

I'm a big fan of a Scoreboard approach that is transparent to all (just like a scoreboard at a sporting event). The scoreboard is most valuable when the score is not improving. This helps leaders and employees create a space to discuss what must change to improve performance. Many organizations don't have scoreboard to guide their performance.

Working with leadership teams, setting and measuring goals provides a framework of objective information where we can gauge our progress towards success. It becomes factual to hold open conversations focused on if we are either hitting our goals or not and if not, what do we need to do differently? Without having measurements how will we know if we are improving or off-track? Take the time to set goals and attach measurements, both leading and lagging as well as quantitative and qualitative. Review consistently so that your team will be able to hold curious conversations focused on improvement by implementing a growth mindset towards overall progress.

There is an overall sense of accomplishment if you have bench marks within your goals along with time, then it makes the goal more easy to obtain.
