Before i start shooting, i should have a clear idea of what I want to achieve with I photos. What is the theme, mood, or message of my shoot? What style, genre, or aesthetic are i going for? What are the expectations and requirements of i client or project? Having a vision and a plan will help i communicate better with my models and guide them through the poses, expressions, and movements that suit my goals.

One responsibility that is not always considered is the communication aspect of it. As a director, you need to be able to effectively communicate with your crew on set. You must know enough about each department so that they can help you achieve the look you desire. I.e. You need to know how to talk to your makeup and hair department, or your gaffer and grip personnel. In order to do this, you must pay attention and willingly listen to how they do things and how they talk to each other. Again, you don't have to know everything about the department, you just need to know enough to communicate effectively.

Models are professionals and working in a collaborative manner will greatly increase the likelihood of a great shoot. Be clear on your goals and those of the client. Ask the models if they have ideas as well after you’ve already made the pictures that were part of your original plan. Then the model can ad lib. These are often the best images of the entire shoot.

Building rapport with models is key to a successful photo shoot. Start by introducing yourself and explaining your vision and what you hope to achieve. Engage them by inquiring about their preferences and past experiences, ensuring they feel valued and understood. Offer compliments on their strengths and invite their input, creating a collaborative environment. Sharing previews of the shots can boost their confidence. A friendly, respectful approach fosters a comfortable atmosphere, making it easier for models to relax and perform their best, resulting in more authentic and compelling images.

Pictures speak louder than words. Models or subjects often understand references better than verbal instructions. Showing examples or demonstrating poses is often more effective than explaining what to do.

As a photographer, we need to put ourselves through the same experience in getting our photos taken -- so that we know what NOT to do. Many photographers think that because I am a photographer too, they don't need to pose me. Incorrect. I do not like showing too much neck or too much head tilt. Make your subject follow your hand when making adjustments. Get them to lean into the camera. Watch for anything in their pockets -- cellphone, keys, or wallet. Crack jokes to make them laugh. Engage in actual conversation to distract them from posing in front of the camera for authentic facial expression that are completely relaxed and natural.

I learned to instruct my subjects from apprenticing with my father. I internalized how he spoke to the subject; his body language as he modeled for them; his tone, and his facial expression. This made it easy for me to copy and later build on his direction. If you can apprentice under a portrait photographer, it's an incredible, fast track education model that takes effect on a level textbooks can't.

Steer clear of negative criticism to maintain the model's confidence and morale. This approach ensures models know exactly what's expected, leading to improved performance and more effective shoots.

Haz de la sesión algo lúdico para todos, rompe el hielo con una música energizante, habla con una gran sonrisa, ten un punto de locura y si haz que participe tu equipo. Eres el director de una coreografía con tus asistentes, el cliente y los modelos.

Estar abierto a nuevas ideas y perspectivas te permitirá experimentar y encontrar soluciones creativas durante la sesión. Escucha las sugerencias del cliente, observa el entorno y mantente receptivo a cualquier oportunidad que se presente.

Fun is ok, and a positive attitude is also needed, but we are at work and don't forget about that. More than having fun we need to be professional. Communicate clearly, we should provide solid feedback, we need to deliver more then "relationship"

Working with models is not any different from working with any other professional. 1. Be clear about Your goals 2. Describe process 3. Give them some space :)

Weryfikuj razem z modelką/modelem efekty sesji na bieżąco. Dobrzej jak aparat jest podłączony do komputera i zdjęcia od razu są dostępne na ekranie. Dzięku temu modelka/model uczy się na przykładach własnych zdjęć. Razem widzicie co działa, a co trzeba poprawić. Razem pracujecie nad końcowym efektem. To bardzo pozytywnie przekłada się na finalne fotografie.
