To overcome technical obstacles during virtual networking at conferences, prepare by updating software, testing equipment, and familiarizing yourself with the platform. Keep a backup device ready, troubleshoot basic issues like switching networks or restarting applications, and use features like chat or social media to stay engaged if audio/video fails. Share contact details in advance, and consider alternative tools for one-on-one discussions. Communicate with event organizers for support or session recordings if needed. Lastly, plan for follow-ups through email or post-event meetings to ensure meaningful connections despite any technical glitches.

Ah, technical obstaclesâthe ultimate party crashers of virtual networking! First, Iâd make sure the basics are covered, like stable Wi-Fi and backup tech. No one wants to be âthat personâ disappearing mid-sentence like a magicianâs trick. Then, Iâd plan for glitches by having quick fixes readyâthink of it as the digital equivalent of duct tape. If all else fails, Iâd own it with a bit of humor: âLooks like my internetâs shy today!â That way, people remember you for your wit, not your lagging screen. Lastly, Iâd double down on pre- and post-event connectionsâbecause networking is about relationships, not just real-time tech. Even a well-timed email can work wonders when Zoom decides to take a nap.

Plan B people, Plan B! (and C, D, E...) The internet can't be relied upon 100% of the time, and the more important your meeting, the less tolerance you should have for technical obstacles. For regular conferences I always make sure I have at least the alternate phone number at hand. For more critical ones with large audiences or VIPs, I have another computer logged on (preferably with an assistant), a secondary internet connection (i.e.: phone hot spot), UPSs powering everything... and the alternate phone number at hand. If all fails, apologize with a bit of humour, send out the materials and let them know that you will be rescheduling. Do not over apologize. Speak confidently. Be "matter of factly": it's not the end of the world.
