I notice a trend where people tend to focus on what they NEED in the moment versus what they WANT for their future. So they end up making decisions that may or may not align with their values. When we aren't aligned and conscious of are values we will accept what is offered to us, and that is a recipe for career frustration and disappointment.

Most job seekers lack direction in their career, or if they think they have it, many times it's not the right one for their ultimate career growth. In a simplistic breakdown: Look at your core strengths, and long term goals - including salary and location, etc. Then you need to break down your experience, and skills. This is not easy, it is not for the faint hearted. It's a discovery and sometimes a tough one because many times you will realize you have been on the wrong path all along. But that is the best part about these raw conversations. I love doing this with my clients. I actually have put aside 2 days a week to really spend time with them to focus on these things to make sure they go down a bulletproof path.

It's not just a book to read; they give you homework to help you identify your career goals and who you are as a professional. It's gold! 2) Reflect on your experience so far: When did you last love what you did at work? What was it? What about the industry? Do you like working with people or alone? 3) Ask for feedback from people around you; what do they say your strengths are? We don't care about weaknesses. We can work on them later but now is not the time. We want to know what you're good at and what you like! 4) Think about the reasons why people come to you. Is there a trend? Can this be used professionally?

Assessing the values of my clients who are lost in their career is always my starting point. As an ex-senior recruiter, I have seen so many people going for one role to another just because the money was better. Often they failed to assess if their values were aligned with the company values they chose to work with, blinded by the lure of a good package. Working on their values as a start is a great foundation to help them shape their career from now on.

Encourage the client to explore their interests and passions. Discuss activities and subjects they enjoy and are passionate about, which can help uncover potential career paths that align with their interests.

We are often told to find our passion and make it our vocation. But work is still work, and some days are just a grind no matter how much you love what you do. Instead of trying to feed your passion, look for the purpose in your work. What is the greater goal? When we find the purpose and make it our own, that purpose can often lead to passion for the greater mission. Work is what will consume the majority of your waking hours, so finding a career with a greater meaning than trading your time for a paycheck is important if you want to have any sense of satisfaction.

A person who enjoys hosting gatherings for friends and family may be interested in a role that requires planning and team building. Looking at the foundational skill of their passion project may help identify the skills that they want to lean into in their professional lives.

Having to choose between the following listed options on how to approach, I would start with exploring passions, taking into consideration that your ground values are already defined. I personally think it is extremely important to understand that skills we use in all our interactions business or personal help us improve current soft skills which are all transferable in every workplace. Start adapting the market to your own personal values and beliefs, understanding your own path to be able to set gaining experience and knowledge further in your career journey.

Time change: many roles that existed 10 years ago don't exist today, and many will be gone in years so that new ones can arrive. You can always adapt what you love to the market, but you cannot force yourself to love something. Listen to your guts first.

We're not perfect and not boring. We change, and our views on life change, as do our goals. As young adults, a lot of things change, too, and we are only trying to figure out what we like and don't. This is to say that no matter what you study, it will not define your career for life. I studied business, and I'm in HR. Many of my colleagues studied psychology, philosophy, and maths. And that's fine!
