Open the appTo improve your EI, you must first know where you stand. Use self-assessment tools, such as the Emotional Intelligence Appraisal, to measure your EI across four domains: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. You can also ask for feedback from your colleagues, peers, and mentors to get a more objective perspective. Identify your strengths and areas for improvement, and set specific goals to enhance your EI.
One of the leading assessments is EQ-i 2.0, the assessment looks at EQ competencies and your effectiveness within those competencies. If you are interested in an assessment, reach out to your HR office and inquire about the tools that are available in house. If there are no in house tools that measure emotional intelligence ask if you can do some joint research to find a tool that your HR team will support.
Reflect on your own emotions and reactions: Take the time to understand your own emotional responses to situations. Acknowledge your strengths and weaknesses in managing your emotions.
Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment with curiosity and openness. It can help you become more aware of your emotions, thoughts, and sensations, and how they affect your behavior and decisions. Mindfulness can also help you calm your mind, reduce stress, and regulate your emotions. You can practice mindfulness by meditating, breathing deeply, or engaging in activities that require your full attention, such as yoga, art, or music.
Often, leaders get lost in thinking about the future. They look towards down-the-line results. But this approach can lead them to look past the needs of today's workforce. How do leaders ensure they don't get lost? Intentionality. Set aside time to reflect, reach out, and show care. There is nothing stronger than a leader who prioritizes kindness and empathy.
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. It is a key component of EI that enables you to connect with your team members, customers, and stakeholders. Empathy can also help you avoid or resolve conflicts, foster diversity and inclusion, and inspire loyalty and commitment. You can empathize with others by listening actively, asking open-ended questions, acknowledging their emotions, and showing compassion and support.
A leader is expected to have strong communication skill which include active listening. In active listening, empathy is key which shows you are not just following their talks, it shows you are interested, relating and feel concerned as you in their shoes. This helps to foster trust, open dialogue and sincere expression in an organization.
Active listening: Show genuine interest in what your team members are saying. Listen attentively and ask open-ended questions to understand their perspectives and feelings. Put yourself in their shoes: Try to understand the emotions and concerns of others by imagining how you would feel in their situation.
Communication is the process of exchanging information and ideas with others. It is another essential skill for leaders who want to demonstrate EI. Communication can help you express your emotions clearly, assert your needs and expectations, provide feedback and recognition, and persuade and influence others. You can communicate effectively by using appropriate verbal and non-verbal cues, adapting your style and tone to your audience, and avoiding jargon and ambiguity.
When providing feedback or addressing issues, express understanding and empathy. Use "I" statements to share your feelings and perspective, and encourage open dialogue.
A good manager listens to his teams, showing that they are important to him. Employees will feel at ease because dialogue is possible, and a relationship of trust will be established. Employees are more motivated because they feel supported.
Experience is the best teacher when it comes to developing EI. You can learn from your own successes and failures, as well as from those of others. You can also seek out new challenges and opportunities that require you to use your EI skills, such as leading a diverse team, managing a crisis, or negotiating a deal. You can learn from experience by reflecting on your actions and outcomes, asking for and accepting feedback, and applying your insights to future situations.
