Steve McQueen REMEMBER WHO HE IS used to routinely go through the script and stike out dialog stating he could convey as much or more through silence or a look. It's not necessary and frankly unwarranted to talk to much when presence, a look, ambience, and music can convey more. A picture is worth a thousand words. In movie making we say show don't tell. Too much exposition is needless. Camera captures nuance... you can't lie to camera. It's why you want to cast well. Some actors express more with back to camera or by being still than by speaking. An expressive faces can capture the feeling more than words. Together it is powerful but sometimes, most of the time LESS is MORE. AND keep it simple. Simple is elegant and beautiful. Show it

LOVE this one: Use VISUAL CONTEXT. This can come in the form of a CU, where your principal actor is showing emotion, articulation; Or in MWS, where the visual context occurs in the interactions of 2 or 3 characters; Or in WS, wherein the SETTING helps convey context: perhaps as a reveal, or as sort of a coda for the conversation we just heard, or perhaps in leaving the characters feeling somewhat "isolated" or "surrounded", etc. Be creative, but I prefer visual context for everything except "routine" pauses in dialogue (which is probably best left to your editor).

Often, a pause / silence is simply there to let the audience consider whatever you've just shown them, and nothing more. Like a ... at the end of a thought.

I think there's a film version of the theory of relativity; it's all related to your intention. The pacing can make something seem long because of what preceded it or seem short simply because of what went before it. It's all relative and needs to be used as the bridge from one scene to another. That bridge has to be precisely the right length.

I think the key to film is to understand all the rules and know all of the techniques, then forget them and use the quiet voice inside of you that tells you what to use. Creatively breaking the rules and making new ones
