One major way a social worker can help prevent elder abuse is by being physically present at the home and observing all that happens at the home. A social worker must be able to understand verbal gestures and even non-verbal communications so as to detect if they are being abused or not. Before you know the signs of dealing with elderly people and what you’re looking for, you need to know the signs of the people that you hire to deal with the elderly. Those are the people you have to worry about because a lot of the people just sit around walk around and do absolutely nothing when they see elderly people being abused that’s the problem you need to bring in better staff and maybe these elderly people can feel safe if there’s a better staff.

See the main problem is hiring people who basically are island people (Haiti), or any other people like the Haitians, whose pay check is considered a small amount or not competitive. The job amounts to being there and collecting a check. Incentive is not there to do a extraordinary job in elderly care. My mom was treated somewhat badly in the nursing she was in. And the workers there were basically from the island. Have no racist bias against immigrants, but if you put such untrained people and pay them a near poverty wage your going to get that kind of care.

We always talk about oh we need to train them. They need to be better trained. They need to learn how to do their job and like doing a job that they’re hired to do you don’t bragging people in every five seconds you have to train them because they’re stupid and don’t wanna do their job, just wanna do anything and get a paycheck you have to bring people who actually care for these elderly people that they’re dealing with not have to train them all the time because like I say if you goddamn stupid then you damn sure don’t need to be around, trying to help elderly people. I just get so tired of always hearing you have to train or they need retraining. That is a crock of shit.

As a family of an elderly person it is important to do proper assessment of different long term care facilities before placing your elderly person. Read reviews about the different facilities. Sometimes the choice of a facility is not based on quality but on what is affordable. In such instances determine if as family members you can be able to visit the elderly person on a regular basis so that you can get regular feedback from them about their stay. Also do your own observations. Know your rights as a family. If something goes wrong or you are unhappy what channels can you follow.

It all boils down to learning how to pick a better staff a staff that will take care of these people that want the job all these other questions are bullshit because it’s the people that you bring in there just to get a paycheck and don’t have no clue on how to deal with people. If you don’t know how to deal with people on the outside, you damn sure can’t deal with elderly people on the inside. That’s my perspective like it a lump I don’t give a shit.
