💡How can you make AI easy for people to understand? Artificial Intelligence is created using code written in a computer language - Python as an example. The code (instructions) tells the computer what it can & can't do as well as giving the computer guidelines to adapt based on the inputs (data) that it encounters. Think of it as a process map with a series of decision points ... "if you see "A", then go that way in the process and if you see "B", then go the other away etc. and these options can expand significantly. Not all AI solutions are created the same. By relating complex AI concepts to familiar everyday experiences, people can grasp the fundamental ideas more easily. However, it's essential to choose analogies carefully to ensure accuracy and avoid misconceptions.

To make AI accessible for people to understand, one can use analogies and metaphors that relate AI to something they are familiar with or interested in. For example, AI can be compared to a recipe that tells a computer how to cook a dish or to a brain that learns from experience and feedback. There are already so many examples of AI in our consumer lives that you can draw from. The classics: Alexa (voice), Netflix/ Amazon (personalization/ recommendation), Tesla (vision), Top Gun (synthetic voice), Zoom/ iPhone (blurred background). Generative AI makes AI super accessible to a broad range of people. ChatGPT and other tools often provide a free trial that you can use to make AI tangible.

Playing with AI is a great way to exemplify what it does. There are plenty of experiments for image classification, face and object detection etc. freely available on the net. Have people try it out and reflect on what they have learned as part of a Digital Literacy program.

It's no secret by now that interactive demos and visualizations are the gold standard for understanding data and AI. But more complex isn't always better. Try to keep it as simple as possible by displaying things in an intuitive way that the audience is familiar with. Or to say it in an overly martial way: when picking your battles, use the surroundings to your advantage.

AI can be broken down into three main types: 1) Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI), which is focused on doing specific tasks. AI tools we use today fall into this category. 2) Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), where the AI can learn and apply its understanding broadly like a human. We are not at this stage of AI innovation yet, so no tools of this kind currently exist. 3) Artificial Superintelligence (ASI), representing an AI that could vastly outperform the brightest human minds and may even exhibit elements of consciousness. The key here is yo keep it simple! As the famous quote from Albert Einstein says: " if you cannot explain it to a six year old, then you don't understand it yourself".

Think of understanding AI like learning a new recipe; it's about getting to know each 'ingredient' or component and how they come together to create something innovative. I'd encourage hands-on experiences, maybe through workshops where people can interact with AI tools directly. Storytelling can also be a fantastic way to illustrate AI's positive impact on workplaces, making it more relatable. Most people who have the knowledge to understand algorithms and all technicalities, tend to use to many concepts, words and approaches that are way too technical for people to understand what is required to get the gist of the main ideas behind AI. In my experience, it is very useful for people to understand where the buzz words come from, what is the intuitive idea behind the concepts and move on to functional easy-to-understand definitions. In a recent talk I gave to people, the main goal was to explain and demo genAI, the working definition of AI I used was “AI is when computers solve tasks resembling human intelligence”. This big umbrella term was enough for everyone to have this intuitive idea and move on to introduce generative AI.

Plain language and no acronyms is ALWAYS the rule when trying to explain anything with technology. Most important is what the technology can do. I have no idea how a graph database works, yet can talk all day long about Gen-AI outcomes. Focus on concepts. Gen-AI is really, really good at reading text based information. So, with that, it can generate content/text and summarize exceptionally well. Knowing this, you can generate book reports, summarize corporate information, write a poem for that special someone, among thousands of other applications. Acronyms and jargon build walls around the "ones in the know" and all the others. To break through this and to make AI understandable and inclusive use plain but descriptive language.

An important approach at the onset of AI learning is to create space for vulnerability. Sharing and exposing feelings of uncertainty and insecurity often creates a more open mindset for learning, and supports confidence growth.

Ensuring that the terminology is clear and understandable is another crucial aspect of making AI accessible to all audiences. AI has a spectrum of users, from people with non-technical backgrounds to experienced engineers deeply involved in research and development. This diversity opens up the possibility of encountering jargon and technical terms. Take "hallucination," as an example. It is referred to in cases where the output of the model is incoherent and meaningless but also in situations where the output is not factual but coherent, making it confusing for non-technical users.

Like any other technology, Artificial intelligence can be used for good – and bad. It is important that people are informed on how to protect their privacy and on the responsible use of AI. AI will not automatically lead to good things, it is up to us to keep it under checks and balances, and apply it for the good of customers and citizens.

I write articles about different AI topics, and my favourite way to encourage learning and exploration is to include memes in my articles. Sometimes, learning a new idea or topic can make it difficult to focus, especially when the ideas are abstract and AI is full of abstract thoughts. When you sit and try to understand the architecture of a model, seeing a meme or two, helps hold the reader's interest.

What better format to learn (maintaining privacy of course), but with AI? Getting into the habit of moving into AI as a source of information (the way you would use Google) is a great way to learn and get comfortable. Everyday challenges can easily be addressed and then you can decide next steps.

When explaining AI, I love to draw on movie metaphors. When talking about the reliability of AI, Minions highlights the unexpected behaviours of these algorithms. Black Mirror stresses the impact of advanced tech on society. And even Little Britain can help understand the difference between "traditional" software ("Computer says no...") and more modern algorithms, introducing the concept of confidence in AI algorithms.

If I have to explain AI to my friend, I would say, "Artificial intelligence is essentially the ability of a computer to learn from data, so it can see, hear, and understand. AI is trained to perform human-related tasks, such as visual perception, speech recognition, and decision-making. " Anyone who wants to learn AI, the best strategy is to pick a very simple dataset from Kaggle explore it , go through different analysis done so far on it and then do not leave it as a Juypter notebook. Instead, try deploying it as a small application. This would be a really insightful experience as we usually stumble upon challenges when we are actually implementing something practically rather than just reading about it or watching something on the topic.
