These organizations not only have effective programs already in place, but they also possess the experience, personnel, and connections essential for truly making a difference.

While I agree that the first step to improve the impact of ESG initiatives is to define your goals and align them with business goals and strategy, we mustn’t forget the reason we are doing it in the first place. The business case for ESG and the role that corporates play has been around forever though for many organizations, ESG continues to be a tick box exercise driven mostly by shareholder pressure than true integration into business strategy. When the reasons why a business is focusing on ESG are in response to the ‘wants of people’ instead of the reason it needs to be done - it won’t be successful. In companies whose primary focus is revenue - money generating activities will always take precedence especially in bear economies.

More so the strategy should be provided for that understanding to take place

For many companies collecting ESG data is still a manual effort, but it doesn’t have to be! There are brilliant SaaS solutions, especially for scope 1 and 2 in complex production environments. They are likely to give you better and more granular insights, and save so much time! No one started in sustainability because they were so passionate about making reports: spend your time on making real impact and automate your data collection.

Based on my experience working with senior property leaders on ESG initiative implementations, here are my top 2 keys to success. Widespread buy-in. Everyone from the bottom-up and top-down needs to get on board. If the leadership team are not fully committed to amplifying the initiatives' value or coalface workers are disengaged, it will ultimately fail. Scalable commitment. I've seen far too many instances where leaders have committed only partially to an initiative or only to a very small-scale pilot - this too is a recipe for failure. The investment needs to be at a level that is significant and scaleable.

In my opinion, it's also pivotal to consider global cultural nuances, ensuring ESG goals and communications are sensitive and resonate with different audiences. ESG initiatives can't adopt a one-size-fits-all approach. The internal stakeholders needs to be upskilled into the ESG cosystem and should make them understand/provide them the benefits of ESG implementation.
