For example I am heading to Korea where I will speak at an event but want to maximise my time in country. First I publish a post detailing my trip and my goal to make new connections. I then push out connection request to 2nd connections of mine in the relevant sector and city. This has delivered 23 new connections who can help me optimise my time in country. Simple. But it works!

Your existing network is very important. What I find is that people you know will know others who may need a speaker. It's important to encourage your network to consider all possible options and show them that you really need their help in offering your services. And because they know you really well you already have a credible introduction to a potential client.

Linkedin groups are great for this. But don't just try and join a group and post. First reach out to the group admin and explain why you want to join and who you are looking to connect with. With the support of the group Admin your group posts will achieve much better reach and the Admin can help open doors for you. Try it. It works !

An example of me creating my own opportunities for speaking includes hosting various community events throughout the USA, Europe, Asia & the Caribbean. I have collaborated with local business leaders & creators in each new place I visited or studied. This is kind of a random hack, but I used Tinder to find partners for an event I hosted in collaboration with the United Nations Refugee Agency in Barcelona. I found a photographer and other people who ended up donating to the event. I was able to speak alongside the Director of the UN Refugee Agency, at my own event! Leveraging university networks is also key. You can easily find department heads who may be willing to let you speak to classes.

I have maintained in contact with the same people I connected with over 12 years ago. Keep a database and check in quarterly to find out what’s going on and if there’s room for collaboration.

Until you have written a bestseller, gone viral with a TedTalk, been #1 with your podcast, featured a hit TV Show or won an Olympic medal, being a part of a speaking agency is the best way to open doors to new markets. If you ensure to be a “Product” that is easy for them to sell and they have a good deal, they will get you bookings that you will never be able to get on your own.
