The SDGs, along with the accompanying procedures and principles, have not only established a universal language for promoting a more balanced, just, and sustainable world but have also empowered all stakeholders in sustainable development to understand their roles, responsibilities, and rights along this journey, fostering fairer participation and benefit-sharing.

When working with my clients who struggle with embedding sustainability and engaging their employees, I use the UN SDGs to survey and discover the interests of the employees. The SDGs that get the most votes can help to determine the type of nonprofits the business should align itself with, which further helps to engage, empower and inspire employees. The UN SDGs provide a framework to see how a company can help solve the world’s biggest social and environmental problems.

Participate in industry conferences, workshops, and forums to build a network. Join online platforms and communities dedicated to sustainable development to share insights and best practices. Foster partnerships through joint projects, enabling knowledge exchange. Establish a culture of openness, encouraging transparent communication to learn from successes and challenges. Collaborative research initiatives and co-authored publications amplify impact. Utilize social media to connect and stay updated on initiatives. By actively participating, sharing expertise, and embracing collective learning, collaboration with SDG-aligned entities becomes a potent avenue for driving sustainable development goals forward.

Effectively communicating your SDG alignment involves showcasing your commitment and achievements through various channels. Develop case studies, impact reports, and sustainability statements that highlight how your services contribute to specific SDGs. Utilize your website, social media, and professional networks to share stories of impact and collaboration. Engaging in public speaking opportunities, webinars, and workshops can further raise awareness of your SDG-aligned services and initiatives.

Its important to keep in mind that structural inequalities for women and marginalized communities introduce an additional layer of complexity. Recent work by The Equality Institute shows that we won’t achieve at least 14 of the 17 SDGs if gender-based violence is not addressed globally. Since gender-based violence "relates to poverty, hunger, poor health and well-being, maternal death, poor education, climate change adaptation, energy and environmental burdens, economic hardships, and societal insecurity," SDG 5 is inextricably linked to the achievement of many others. For that reason, it is important to engage communities and design interventions aimed at investing or supporting the achievement of SDGs with an intersectional lens.

What hurdles for collaboration do you see? Despite being very purpose based, even leading edge SDG consultancies find levels competition in their mindset/cultures getting into the way of collaborating more with others! Some of it is justified (in a narrow sense) as often 3-10 consultants compete for client projects. And, large consultancies hoover up talent & client contracts as this field of work grows! This is surely challanging & frustrating! I personally find important not to get caught up in this mentally and with resilient business strategies, as: The global challenges we face are huge and it needs all existing SDGconsultancies & more to work them. Our egos & short term cash needs are powerful barriers to collaboration to keep in mind
