One initial reaction I often notice on myself when faced with criticism is defensiveness. However I learned over the years of experience that this is not a good start to open up to change. Criticism especially if it is brough forward on eye-level, and in a mindful way (yes here bosses can learn obviously also), it's a great chance to learn and grow. If I have this in mind as an initial thought when confronted with criticism it helps me significantly to endorse what has been said, reflect on it and change behaviour over time....

When receiving criticism, stay quiet both internally and externally. Listen carefully and focus on understanding the feedback. The fact that you're having this conversation instead of being dismissed is a positive sign. Ask for specific examples of desired performance improvements. Objective criticism is valuable. For instance, if someone says, "I don't feel you're contributing to the project," break it down. Compare your ticket closure rate with your teammates' If it's lower, there’s room for improvement If the feedback is specific, like "your ticket closures are 20% below average," don’t argue. Instead, evaluate why. Are your tickets more complex? Are you not documenting your work thoroughly? Use this feedback to enhance your performance

Avoid dismissing feedback just because it's uncomfortable. If the criticism is valid, identify areas for improvement and create a plan to address them. Self-reflection is key to turning feedback into actionable steps for better performance. It’s also crucial to understand who you are and why you perform the way you do. This might be a good time for self-reflection. I took a Kolbe Index years ago, which helped me understand my natural abilities and target jobs that fit them, rather than fighting my nature. The most effective way to instigate lasting change is by cultivating new habits. Significant changes often fail to endure. For instance, if your morning routine involves stopping for coffee on your way to work and waiting in line to be served, consider breaking that unproductive habit. Instead, invest in a coffee machine. While your coffee brews, take a moment to write down ten tasks you aim to accomplish that day. This small shift not only prevents you from rushing out the door but also allows you to start your day relaxed, with clearly defined goals.

1. ask for support (if any needed). Whether the support is for getting connects, mentors, funding for acquiring a new certification or training, funding to build a team etc. Since it could be that the feedback provided cannot be achieved single handedly all alone and may need collaboration, further support or funding. 2. If mentoring is needed to carve out the ‘How’ to improve then seek mentoring with an expert who can guide.
