Choose at least 5 to 10 orgs that you think are making an impact on the world, and study their materials and how they communicate with their audience. For example, review their website, sign up for their emails, follow them on social media, subscribe to their magazines. Decide what you think they do well and want to emulate in your own nonprofit, and decide what you want to do differently. With million of nonprofits in the word, the competition for attention and donors is steep, so it’s important to pay attention to what other orgs are doing.

Enrol in online courses offered by platforms like Coursera, edX, and Udemy to gain expertise in areas such as fundraising, board governance, and program evaluation. So many organizations fail to budget for and invest in this, which leads to much more expensive and disruptive challenges in the long run. Investing in consulting or training that boosts professional development, team understanding and alignment, and trust-building makes it easier for your team to do the important work needed to make an impact.

Conferences are a great place to network with other nonprofit professionals, get new ideas for conducting your work and/or connecting with your audience, and learn about new data, trends, or technologies in the nonprofit space. There are TONS of nonprofit conferences offered every year, so do your research and make sure you attend ones that will help you learn new skills that are specific either to your advocacy focus, or areas where you need to improve. For example, if you are an animal welfare organization, attend Animal Care Expo. If you need help with marketing and communications, attend the Nonprofit Storytelling Conference. If you need help with technology, attend the Nonprofit Technology Conference. The possibilities are endless.

The need for innovation among nonprofits is clear if organizations will continue to deliver on the promises they make over time. Working closely with nonprofit organizations, I have observed three main types of innovation: * General innovation introduces something new to an organization to address a specific need within the organization. * Transformational innovation has a profound and lasting effect on the organization’s core structure or operations. * Groundbreaking innovation introduces something few, if any, other organizations are doing. Groundbreaking innovation represents not just innovation within the organization, but within the culture at large.
