Criticism can trigger stress in anyone. The subconscious has the task to keep you safe, it wants you to stay in comfort zone. So you will have your comfort zone challenged by someone. This trigger a fight/flight situation for the mind, and you might start breathing shallowly, quicker and in through your mouth. In this situation, it would be very useful to be aware of how the body reacts in a stress situation (as I described above) with your breath starting to become in your chest, shallow, and rapid. To "counter attack" this reply from the subconscious, which is preparing you to attack (rage), or flight (fear)... where you will need energy (more oxygen less CO2): breath in through your nose, calmly and extend your outbreath

Ways to implement mindfulness when receiving criticism from your supervisor. 1.Acknowledge to yourself that you are being triggered 2. Take deep breaths while they are talking 3. Ask yourself why you are being triggered, is it the tone, feeling attacked, are you overwhelmed and feel like this is another thing wrong, are you burnout, or do you not like receiving criticism 4. Once they have finished, ask clarifying questions as appropriate, thank them for the feedback and ask if you can have time to reflect on what was said and then follow up. (Because my face expressions are loud, I like to smile through it)
