An underperforming employee can be a catalyst for team-wide improvement when handled correctly. To inspire their growth and success:
- Set specific, achievable goals. Clear targets provide direction and a sense of accomplishment.
- Offer constructive feedback regularly. This encourages self-reflection and continuous improvement.
- Create a supportive environment. Empower them with the resources and mentorship they need to succeed.

As a leader focused on bringing out the best in my team, here's how I would approach an underperforming employee: 1. Meet one-on-one to have an open, empathetic discussion. Avoid blame, and instead, share specific examples of where they can improve. Encourage them to share their perspectives and insights. 2. Work together to craft a clear plan with measurable goals and actionable steps. Empower them to take ownership by soliciting their input on the plan. 3. Schedule regular check-ins to monitor progress, offer guidance, and celebrate small wins. Position yourself as a partner in their growth, not just a manager demanding results. The key is to inspire them to take an active role in their own success. Hope you found this helpful!

Getting to know your team as individuals is critical. Why do they do what they do? What motivates them? What management style do they respond to? These are critical elements in improving individual performance. Then the generic steps I would use: - Scheduling proper 1:1 time regularly, face to face if possible or at least virtual/cameras on. - Stick to that time as much as possible. Avoid last minute cancellations. - Be open about your role and the coach and their role as the individual. - Ask more than you tell. Focus on the why. - Are they absolutely clear on expectations? Is anything impacting their ability to work? - Set SMART objectives for improvement - Always do what you say you will do as a follow up.
