What I usually do to regain control in a constantly interrupted coaching or mentoring session, I see to it that I establish clear ground rules at the start. I would politely address interruptions by acknowledging the concern and suggesting a dedicated time for questions. I would say, âI appreciate your enthusiasm. Letâs note your question and revisit it during our Q&A segment.â This approach, ensures respect and structure, fostering a focused and productive environment. Additionally, using positive reinforcement to highlight good listening behaviors can encourage participants to stay engaged and respectful throughout the session.

I've found that setting clear expectations at the start of a session can help minimize interruptions. An agenda or ground rules sent ahead of time is a great way to do this. Establishing a 'parking lot' for off-topic discussions allows participants to note their thoughts without derailing the conversation. Additionally, using active listening techniques to acknowledge interruptions and steer back to the agenda is crucial. Phrases like, 'Thatâs an interesting point, letâs revisit it after we cover this...' can help. This not only keeps the session focused but also values every contribution and maintains a positive environment.

Rule of Thumb & Rule of Train. Rule of Thumb is where normally I will set a certain parameter in order to reach the goal of that mentoring/coaching session. I would not want to use the word rules, because it might sounds a bit too "strict". Following this parameters will somehow guide us. Which this comes to relation with my next practice which is the Rule of Train. Like a train route, it always has been set from Station 1 to 2,then maybe 3. And the one that making sure of this is the route Master and the train conductor. So we as the mentor/coach need to have a clear route.
