Often leaders/clients don't hear what they say. I start with playing back what I am hearing through the risk lens.."so in doing X we will risk Y, is that what you want?'.. If the answer is hesitant or a no - then you've achieved a positive outcome through lifting awareness (first step). If the answer is 'yes' - then document the risk and put forward suggestions for mitigating. Ultimately, the ethical approach of raising awareness and ensuring the client 'decides' based on the risk means they consciously accept or not - key to accountability.

Handling a client who requests shortcuts that compromise safety requires a firm but diplomatic approach. Start by explaining the risks involved, both in terms of potential accidents and legal liabilities, and how these shortcuts could lead to long-term delays, higher costs, or reputational damage. Emphasize that safety is a priority and non-negotiable, and offer alternative solutions that maintain safety standards while meeting project goals. Be transparent about the consequences of ignoring safety protocols and make it clear that your commitment to safety ultimately benefits the projectâs success. This approach ensures you maintain professional integrity while protecting everyone involved.
