Reflection matters since it allows the learner to have a sense of agency about their own learning. Students have more connection to what they are learning when they can write about their growth and areas of improvement.

Studies show that students have cognitive overload in their day to day personal, academic, and work lives. Reflection allows the “processing” of information that a student has learned. By enabling more time for reflections, students can gain insights on what they specifically learned from a lecture or training, where they may have remaining questions, and what next steps they will take from what they learned. In summary, build time in your courses for reflection for students to think! Don’t underestimate this power of reflection!

Reflection is what we do in tutorials. Precisely why lectures and tutorials are separated. In l tired, it’s a one way track. Lecturer lectures and students listen and digest. That’s about it. Whereas in tutorials, it’s the reflection on the lecture topics. This is when students participate, sharing their knowledge from attending lectures. Which means, reflecting on the lectures. However, sometimes, as a former lecturer, I do reflect on the specific topics covered in the lectures, so that students can gasp the subject matter, before participating. The point of reflecting is not about pointing the mistakes, but guiding them by probing so that they are able to reflect back again on what they have shared. For them, to ponder and think.

After a topic is done, one always needs to check the understanding on the topic. Every student projects their own thoughts and experience into learnings. It's good to ask what the concept means to you to check on reflection and concretise understanding.
