In my experience the #1 tip to successfully addressing an audience is mastery of your subject matter. If you know what you're speaking about, you can modulate as the situation requires. You often do not know what you're going to be facing. It can be a conference room, an auditorium, or a microphone from a TV news station. The audience may be engaged or bored or skeptical. Sometimes your computer/presentation fails and you have to continue by memory. Other times you may be ambushed by a live streamer or journalist who is already recording. Each of these can require a different modulation that can't necessarily be planned on. So you're going to have to adjust on the fly. But if you know your topic you can handle all of the above. Many speakers feel uncomfortable with the silence of pauses when they talk and are tempted to fill the air with "uhm" or "like". Giving a pause allows the audience to digest your point, sometimes called an "investment pause". The extreme opposite is listening to teens speak where every gap is filled with "uhm", "like", and "y'know" - I'm still working on this with one of my teen daughters! :)
