I've been that problem band member. When I started out, aged 18 I had too much head knowledge and wanted to showcase it in every song. I'm thankful for the gracious old hands who didn't fire me but still managed me with a firm hand. The advice and many second chances back then shaped the musician and leader I am today. I often find myself imparting the wisdom I received 'last century'. One of the better one liners... "if you can't hear everyone playing on stage... maybe you're too loud?"

When you communicate with the band member one on one, that person may begin to feel that you, as the teacher, respect and care about the person. Ask the student questions about what may be bothering them. Ask the person how you, the teacher, can make the ensemble better. Ask for their opinions to help solve any problems that they may observe. Then, you could possibly gain an advocate rather than a troubled member of the group. Seek the member's advice when possible.

One thing I've found helpful being a band member and the creator of a band is there should always be that one calm voice of reason. For any band to have success and longevity, everyone needs to feel their specific contribution is integral to the band's success. Really listen to a members issues or complaints. To them, it's important. Let them know their unique gift is the skill set that helps shape the band's vibe. Personal matters can impact the harmony of any band. Address those moments with a view to support can go a long way in quelling chaos. Be patient with them. We artists can be temperamental. Lastly, everyone must buy-in to the band's success from the start. This keeps members focused on one goal.

I've read most of the responses to this question and they are all incredibly great. So, to not be redundant, I would add at the end of rehearsals, what should be expected at the next rehearsal, what should be ready at the next rehearsal, or what needs to be better the next time the band gets together. I had a band member that wouldn't practice the songs he didn't like. That can be aggravating and really mess with the bands flow and direction. But, I found that at the end of a rehearsal to objectivity say what needs to be prepared better for the next rehearsal works for me.

One would think that working with a band is a walk in park. It is evident that as leader of the band you must always take precautions in the way you treat your band, whose opinions differ in one way or another. One thing I learned from being a band leader, have every express themselves in a way that would make them feel comfortable to sing or whatever the case maybe. But also as leader, one must not allow the band to divert the content and content at hand.

This is not just for music industry, in any environment where there is a team and team works matter, defining roles and responsibilities to each one is very important. And it is even more important that each one knows what other team members roles and responsibilities are, to better understand how each ones role is connected to the team's goal. Also helps to fill-in for a colleague in the team.

Band members should be able to relate outside rehearsals and performance times. Friendship promotes bonding which is required in binding members into a band. Knowledge of temperament of each member can only be gained at one to one level. The leader should be able to relate somewhat with the moods of members so as to be guided in handling them most effectively and efficiently.

With the rise of social media and the pressure on artists to be "always on," issues like burnout, depression, and substance abuse are increasingly common in the music industry. The workload and demands placed on artists today are immense. Work collaboratively to develop a plan that works for everyone, balancing productivity and wellbeing. For example, if a member is not comfortable being active on social media, brainstorm alternatives like batch recording content in one session for planned distribution, or providing education on effectively using platforms. The key is open communication, realistic expectations, and supporting each other through challenges. Protecting mental health must be a priority alongside creating music.
