The best way to ensure that candidates are comfortable sharing during interviews is to be conversational. We give this tip to candidates all of the time, but it's also important for the interviewer. Asking questions off of a list makes the interview seem more like an interrogation and who wants to go through that? It's best to ask open-ended questions that can lead to a conversation about the skills needed for the role. Another large factor is being personable and present. Nothing is worse than a grumpy interviewer who is just doing this because they have to. Really understanding the candidate and listening to their answers can make the candidate more comfortable and willing to provide more in-depth answers.

While this may seem like a really simple tip, I've found that starting the interview by explaining what the candidate will experience during your conversation goes a long way to relax them, making them more open to the conversation that will follow. After that, I start off providing a quick overview of myself and the role to lay the foundation for the conversation that follows and takes the pressure off the candidate in those early moments where they are most likely to have higher nerves. Approaching the conversation with the warmth and understanding you would want in any dialogue between two people will elicit more authentic, less canned responses.

During interviews, one should create a welcoming atmosphere and encourage interpersonal communication (two-way communication). The interviewer should actively listen, show empathy and provide positive feedback. This can also be achieved by managing the time of an interview and making sure that it doesn't go for too long.

Candidates may feel nervous at the start of interview. In order to open up him interviewer shall start with warm welcoming the candidates followed by short introduction about himself and can share his own career journey in short. This way candidates feel personally welcomed and interview will have two way conversations instead of Q&A.

The interviewer needs to possess sufficient emotional intelligence to effectively conduct the interview, considering that the candidate's potential is akin to an iceberg, where only a fraction is visible. The purpose of the interview is to establish connections rather than barriers with the candidate, enabling the acquisition of necessary information to facilitate the hiring decision.

It can be difficult to truly open up during an interview unless you feel heard and understood by the interviewer. To express empathy and encourage candidates to open up during interviews, start by actively listening to their responses and acknowledging their feelings and perspectives. Show genuine understanding and validation of their experiences and emotions, demonstrating that you appreciate their unique journey. Additionally, share your own experiences or examples to relate to their situation, creating a sense of connection and trust that can make candidates more comfortable sharing openly.

It is crucial for interviewers to see themselves in the candidate's shoes, to be able to relate to how they've felt anytime in their career that they have had to be the one being interviewed. This will allow the conversation to be more relaxed if the interviewer can guide and lead the interview by creating a space where the candidate can feel that the interview is a "get to know you" conversation where they are trying to understand their previous experience and the education, instead of treating the interview like a formal, line by line interrogation. By relating to the candidate's position going in to an interview, the interviewer can turn the conversation into a relaxed setting where the candidate can comfortably share their experience.

One way to build trust in a conversation such that a deeper level may be reached is to be authentically invested and not be afraid to share your weaknesses or doubts. Showing candidates you are willing to be vulnerable will create space for them to offer their thoughts, feelings and reflections - which makes it easier to actively work towards a trusted bond and considering eachothers point of view.

When candidates speak, give them your full attention. Listen carefully to their words, tone, and body language. Understanding how they feel and what they think is essential. Ask open-ended questions to encourage candidates to share more about themselves. Open-ended questions help them provide detailed responses, offering deeper insights into their motivations and experiences. Assure candidates that their feelings are normal and valid. Acknowledge their emotions and concerns. For instance, you could say, "It's completely understandable to have some worries about such an important opportunity." Reassure them by saying, We're here to support you every step of the way and answer any questions you have. Your success is important to us."

In Asian cultures, there is often more emphasis on harmony and saving face. Directly questioning a candidate's motivations or goals may be seen as too confrontational. Instead, focus on creating a welcoming environment where the candidate feels comfortable opening up voluntarily. Ask open-ended questions about their background and interests to draw them out. Appeal to their desire to contribute and grow within a collaborative team. Avoid putting them on the spot with scaling questions. The key is establishing rapport and letting the candidate reveal their own internal motivations, without forceful probing.

Why do you need to continously improve. Show the benefit of improving. Do it in a way that says, yes this is good but what can we do better? What is better? How is it better? Why is it better?

During interviews or any form of feedback, the instinctive response may be to push back against their resistance, attempting to persuade or argue with them. However, as the article wisely points out, this approach often leads to increased tension and resistance. Reframing is definitely a powerful tool for rolling with resistance. By offering an alternative perspective or interpretation of the situation, you can help candidates see the bigger picture. This can be especially valuable when dealing with candidates who might have different motivations or priorities. It shows that you're willing to understand their point of view and work towards a mutually beneficial solution.

Many a times, interview discussions get into difference in opinions creating conflicts. To make it a better way, its important to add point of views in a positive ways by sharing the right thought process. Sometimes, the candidates might not see the bigger picture and it is needed to make them understand by encouraging, appreciating and motivating them as what they are bringing to the table, what are the gaps and key opportunity areas.

Make sure you yourself as the recruiter have integrity and do what you say you will when it comes to follow up. Good or bad news

Here are some practical tips in no particular order to help a candidate to open up. - A simple smile to show you are friendly and happy to see them. - Empathy especially when the candidate has had a difficult journey for example . - A glass of water/tea always is a welcoming gesture to your 'guest'. - Asking easy questions to start with. Talk about things which are easy to talk about, like hobbies for example. - Call the person by their name - its an easy rapport building technique - Make the room open, take out obstacles between you both to give the feeling you are one as opposed its you against me/us. Hope these are of some use.

A couple of things that have encouraged openness in my interviews: -Being humble yourself. Especially in cases where a candidate is strong in an area that you may not be, take the opportunity to build their confidence and allow them a moment to "geek out" on their successes in that area -Addressing that everyone has opportunities for improvement, no matter their level or position. Give an example of yourself if you feel comfortable

Supporting self-efficacy during an interview can significantly impact the outcome. Start by setting a positive, relaxed tone. Approach the conversation as a two-way street, emphasizing mutual learning. Provide clear context on what’s expected and why their role or perspective matters, boosting their sense of purpose. Actively listen, and sprinkle in affirmations or nods to acknowledge their contributions. Encourage them to share their experiences and successes, subtly reminding them of their capabilities. If they hesitate or stumble, offer a moment of reassurance, emphasizing the value of their unique perspective. Through these mindset hacks, you can help interviewees believe in their abilities and enhance the quality of the conversation.

Don't forget some candidates really struggle with self-belief and even though they know they are capable, it may come across as lacking confidence. Some Neuro-Diverse candidates I have worked with recently have had some issues around this and I suggest to hiring managers and interviewers to take the candidate for a tour of the workplace (where possible) and ask them to explain what they are seeing. Offering what you see as strengths in the candidate and asking them to elaborate on those strengths will give confidence to the candidate to open up and be more relaxed with their answer

Remember that, for the interviewee, this may be a stressful and challenging experience. For you, it may be the twelfth person you've interviewed in two days. Be aware of exactly what's going through the mind of the interviewee and what mindset they may be in. Nerves will be naturally frayed, so be aware of how you can make the person give of their best, and be careful not to judge their suitability too early.

Below is my other recommendations: + Begin with small talk about family, interests and background to establish rapport. Use appropriate honorifics. + Ask open-ended questions that allow them to reveal values, passions and duties that indirectly disclose motivations. + Avoid direct confrontation or skepticism that could cause a loss of face. + Frame the opportunity as a chance to contribute to the organization's harmonious success. + Be patient and let the conversation unfold gradually like peeling an onion. Allow time for reflection. + Build a warm, trusting relationship where the candidate feels safe to open up and share more about themselves.

It is important that you give the candidate an opportunity to interview you and the company. Encourage the candidate to share their thoughts on their career goals and gain insight into what they are looking for in their next chapter. This question can bring a wealth of knowledge and ideas that you can incorporate for future hires and business decisions. This also ensures the candidate will feel heard and seen and reassure them that they are making the right decision when choosing your company.

You have to go into each conversation with a genuine sense of curiosity. Candidates can feel when you're just asking questions to check off an answer, and it's crucial to that you're actively listening in a way that shows you're truly interested in hearing the answer.

To create a deeper connection with interview candidates, pretty early on in the interview I like to delve into what appear to be their passion projects, such as volunteer experiences, on their resume. This technique transcends the job-specific queries, allowing candidates to relax, open up, and showcase their values, ultimately leading to more meaningful and authentic interactions during the interview process. If it's something they list on their resume, it gives me the opportunity to craft some open-ended questions without risking overstepping into their personal business, and it's a great opportunity for the interviewee to then tie their answers back to other skills on their resume and build up their confidence.
