It’s important to keep reviewing the classic plays from all cultures, from kabuki to koodiyattam and from Greek to Cambodian puppet theatre to all forms of storytelling and theatre practices. Immersing myself in all forms of theatre and finding the interdisciplinary connections to them helps me to utilize each form in my current and future theatre productions. It's most important to read the classics, but also it's important to present your own interpretation in anything you do. Put 'you' into it. Shakespeare, August Wilson, Bob Fosse, Andrew L. Weber, etc. All had their unique stamp. That will set you apart.

We are not at a loss for historical documentation of theatre. It is very helpful to go back and read the works of playwrights that came before, or any of the countless scholarly books and article about those plays, or the historical dialogues surrounding the arts through history. Knowing where the art came from can help you see where it might go in the future with you at the helm. Just make sure to read up on your contemporaries as well, lest the arts move on without you.
