I sit on a few Boards and come in to advise very frequently. What I see that is most common is as follows: The Pipeline is full of people who cannot say yes. Never take a 'no' from someone who can't say 'yes'. Many sales people and leaders are excited to get an opportunity in the pipeline even though that person cannot say yes. In the same grain, too many sales people believe that the person who is in the PL, who can't say yes, can or will go get the person who can. When was the last time that happened? Another large issue I see, which I feel is the largest issue, is not telling your prospects what their roles is. We know how to sell it but they don't know how to buy it. In order to foster common goals and a stronger collaboration, SLAs can serve as a supporting factor. Aligning on a monthly basis and reviewing the results leads to stronger collaboration, better communication and in the end better results.

When marketing and sales have shared goals or tension metrics they form a natural alignment. For tension metrics specifically, if marketing starts producing more leads but sales win rate starts to tank it would indicated there is a problem. No one group celebrates if part of the GTM process is failing. Additionally, treating marketing as only top of funnel is a huge mistake. Best practice would be to ensure marketing is measured on both it's ability to grow top of funnel but also how they contribute to supporting the sales pipeline with assets, warming, and brand development.

In a perfect world, those teams should cooperate, in a way that the sales is delivering first-hand insights about the clients and the market for marketing so that messaging would be more suitable, and the marketing should be a megaphone for the sales by communicating one to many. Naturally there is not much space for potential clash, if the communication strategy is well defined and communicated internally, and processes are setup precisely. Both of the teams can and should support all (or the most) of stages in Client's Journey. If there is no synergy, it's usually the issue of poor leadership and wrongly defined expectations. Pro tip: If you do lead nurturing, don't ask you sales to close the deals instantly after you got them.

One think that I would love to add while discussing Conversion Rates is the length of the Sales Process. Sometimes, the fact that there is no conversion tomorrow from today's sales activities, is just perfectly normal. In huge enterprise organisations, it often takes months after the decision could me made. The most risky thing, is to constantly change such a process with expectation for quicker results, or even stopping the sales initiatives at all with the flag, that project failed. Process optimisation is natural, but not every sales can be made in 1 month. Worth to remember while planning the business. Also, optimising many factors in the process in the same time, will result in total lack of idea which change had what impact.

What should my sellers and marketing team members be capable of? By doing so, one can speed up the performance of a team much faster.
