Begin by having an open conversation about their needs and your capabilities. For example, you might say, "I'm thrilled to work with you and understand you have high expectations. To ensure we meet your goals, let's outline a detailed plan and timeline. Here's what we can realistically deliver in the first month, and we'll adjust as needed based on your feedback." I believe that this approach sets a transparent framework, establishes mutual understanding, and helps manage their expectations without overpromising, ensuring a smooth collaboration.

If you feel like a client is REALLY good BUT is also demanding, you need to set your boundaries with them right away - discuss the scope of your work, the responsibilities, and the inital contract - all of which must be communicated openly and transparently. You can never let your client get the best of you in the sale.

In my experience you have to set the tone and expectations from day 1. If you don't you will set the tone for your relationship and this will continue. Clients will always push and want more, but how you manage and handle is essential. As in any relationship, boundaries are important. Remind of timelines, the process and deliverables agreed in the proposal/pitch. Always listen, but be clear and firm back on what was agreed. My biggest learning with over 25 years working in an agency, is that if a relationship really is not working in the initial period and that clients are not happy with the scope and work as agreed, listen to your gut and cut your losses early. Don't risk team morale if impossible to please.

Managing new client expectations from day one is crucial for a smooth working relationship. Setting clear boundaries around deliverables and timelines helps prevent misunderstandings. Regular communication ensures clients are kept in the loop, while being proactive allows you to address potential issues before they escalate. By aligning expectations early and staying transparent throughout, you can foster trust and build a strong foundation for long-term success.
