Once you have identified your genre, audience, and purpose, you can begin writing your pitch. Pitches are generally one or two paragraphs in length and should include the title and genre of the novel, the main character(s) and their goal(s) or problem(s), the primary conflict or obstacle(s) that prevent them from achieving their goal(s) or solving their problem(s), the stakes or consequences of success or failure, as well as a unique selling point or hook that sets your novel apart from others in the same genre. For example, The Last Queen by C.W. Gortner is a historical fiction novel about Juana of Castile, who must battle for her throne, freedom, and sanity in a treacherous world. The Martian by Andy Weir is a science fiction novel about Mark Watney, an astronaut stranded on Mars who must use his ingenuity to survive and find a way back to Earth. Lastly, The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss is a fantasy novel about Kvothe, a wizard, musician and adventurer who recounts his life story to a chronicler while battling an ancient evil.
