Engaging the audience physically is extremely important. The easy way is to ask common questions: "Who in this room has ever experienced X?" What I love to do is push it a little further and reduce the hands down to few step-by-step. "Lower your hand if Y", "Keep your hand up if Z". Of course it should feel very natural but it keeps people in suspense.
