A critical step in measuring the effectiveness of any new program is taking a hard and honest look at what you want to achieve and why. For example if looking at a stronger pipeline of management talent you may need to offer mentoring and/or training to ensure that new managers are equipped to handle diverse teams, cultures, difficult situations, etc. If looking at diversity in candidate pools consider where you are recruiting, are you requiring a diverse slate for interviews, are you providing diverse interviewers. Its important to tackle measurable and achievable goals. Setting some unattainable standard will only mire good intentions in disappointment.

To assess the impact and efficacy of a diversity and inclusion training programme, Feedback and surveys: Collect information from participants about programme relevance and learning results. Performance metrics: Monitor changes in team relationships, cooperation, and production. Retention and Engagement: Determine employee satisfaction and turnover rates. Indicators of an inclusive culture include diversity in leadership roles and employee representation. Qualitative assessments involve conducting interviews to measure changes in behaviour and attitudes. Long-term organisational change involves assessing progress towards inclusive policies and practices.

DEI always tends to be a hot topic only after a complaint is made. Even when D&I is active within a company it is hard to nail down a specific focus for training. A solid, and simple, approach to this is to see what happened in the past a build from there. Do you have sustained comments that focused on poor representation of a specific minority group? Does your company have a recurring issue with pay disparity between Male and Female employees? Tells like these will give you a starting point and allow your DEI teams to build an effective D&I training program to correct persistent problems first.

To check if diversity and inclusion training works, look at how people behave before and after. See if they treat each other better and understand different backgrounds. Ask for feedback from participants to know what's helpful and what's not. Keep an eye on things like how diverse your team is and if people feel included.

Em uma experiência passada, conversávamos com as pessoas para saber como elas se sentiam no ambiente e pedíamos para que nos passassem sua percepção frequentemente. O retorno de pessoas que passam e/ou passavam por isso era importante para vermos se o ambiente estava ou não alinhado com esse valor. Outra métrica que usamos foi o de verificarmos os processos seletivos para identificar quem eram os participantes e verificávamos se realmente a decisão havia sido tomada pela melhor pessoa, se respeitava o perfil da vaga etc.

Data is king! If you don’t have metrics, feedback and analysis you cant possibly drive a successful result. My biggest area of caution here: consider who and how this information is compiled to ensure that it is free from bias. It always comes down to the efficacy of the questions, what data is deemed irrelevant, how the data is collected. Data can easily be manipulated to prove any point; ensure there is transparency on the standards and how the analysis is derived.

This piece of the puzzle is key. When you analyze the data, it needs to be clear to your organization what major takeaways your DEI teams need to focus on. If you struggle with this piece it will not matter what your analysis reveals. Having this foundation set will allow your team the ability to effectively correlate relevant data for a smoother report.
