Many tend to think innovation is about having creative ideas but in my experience, the most critical first step for having a culture of innovation in any organization is to have a clearly articulated ambition for innovation which is aligned with the organization vision. Only then people can truly pursue creative ideas which actually matter.

A purpose is a statement that describes why your organisation exists and the impact it wants to make (beyond making profit). A vision is a picture in words of what the future might look like with your purpose fulfilled. While purpose statements are usually enduring, vision statements can be time-stamped. i.e. you can have a vision of the future 6 months from now, a year from now, 10 years from now, 100 years from now, etc. Together, clear purpose and vision statements help foster innovation and collaboration by providing common language to enhance communication, aligning team goals, guiding decision-making, promoting targeted risk-taking and creating a sense of belonging.

The leaders are key enablers in fostering innovation and a collaborative culture in any organization. Here are general steps to make sure leaders are doing it: 1. Leaders need to be involved in day-to-day operations 2. Have an excellent understanding of the organization's short-term & and long-term goals 3. Able to convert these strategies in straightforward words to the team below 4. Making sure every step in day-to-day operation is aligned with it 5. Challenge the status quo and bring a new perspective to the table 6. Have a fair understanding of new technologies or off-the-shelf products to provide the right direction on the build/buy kind of decision 7. Ensure cross-functional experts are engaged and collaborate towards a common goal

I always advocate for following the PO3 storyline for innovation. P stands for Purpose, O for Objective, O for Output, and O for Outcome. Purpose addresses the "why," Objective tackles the "what," Output outlines tangible, measurable specifics, while Outcome focuses on intangible aspects such as collaboration and relevant achievements, yet still quantifiable.

As a leader, continuous learning is a lifetime process and it should be encourage in a workplace. Organize training and development that aligns with the organization's growth. This improves the curiosity and eagerness to implement innovatively to drive change in the organization.

The best way to encourage Curiosity and Learning is by doing it yourself. You can not fake it. Staying informed about the latest trends in your industry and sharing the insights with your team can motivate and inspire them to find more information and learn. Always be at the forefront in demonstrating your willingness and ability to learn.

Failing is part of the innovation. The more you fail, the closer you are towards your achievement. The important thing is continuous learning and trying towards the clearly defined objective/goal. In an open, motivating and no blame culture, I have seen people perform to the best of their common/unique abilities.

While we aim to have all voices contribute, research shows that in a group of 8, 3 people speak 67% of the time. Thus, intentional practices, done regularly, to hear from everyone, can spark opportunities for innovative collaborations. Round robins. Assigning roles like pros/cons. Keeping open a document for continued collaboration between meetings. All of these small acts can add up to big wins for inclusion and innovation.

While diversity is really valuable, it's also crucial for team members to share a common set of values and goals. I believe, an overly diverse team without a unifying culture may face challenges in terms of alignment and cohesion. Therefore, alongside diversity, there should also be a focus on developing cross-cultural competence within teams to ensure that members can navigate and appreciate each other's cultural nuances. I would also profess balancing Inclusion with meritocracy so that the individuals are recognized, rewarded, and promoted based on their skills, competencies, and contributions.

They key to create a culture of creativity and innovation in an organisation is to create a coaching culture. When -leaders show up as coaches & - employees feel psychologically safe It creates a shift in the kind of conversations that take place in an organisation which allows executives to explore ideas they haven't dared to before.

The best way to improve communication is to use 'playback'. 'Playback' is where the receiver plays back their understanding of what is being communicated. It's important to understand that the sender of the information is responsible for the clarity of the message, so if the receiver doesn't fully understand, it's not the receiver's fault. Example: The sender says something complicated and then 2 scenarios follow: Scenario 1: the sender can then say "I'm not sure if I managed to explain that very well. Could someone have a go at playing back your understanding?" Scenario 2: the receiver says "This is what I think you're saying...<insert playback>" Both scenarios give the chance to correct any misunderstandings.

Feedback is Continuous Learning! While not everyone enjoys receiving feedback and not ever single session is primarily positive, it is extremely important that we provide feedback moments if we are to grow and develop. In my experience, tough love is a dynamic way to communicate the strengths and opportunities in a person, team, or organization. The most important piece to this is how the leader facilitates the feedback to ensure the downward effects are always to move forward and to perform at higher and exceptional levels.

An open and transparent system will always foster constructive and insightful feedback and contributions without fear of criticism.

In my experience, leading by example is the best way to promote innovation and creativity in a team. This can take the form of talking about where you’ve introduced a new idea into a system of work, having a team meeting centred around sharing new ideas, organising a team showcase of great thinking from outside your business or your industry, and especially making a big deal about and celebrating new ideas from the team when they occur. These all foster an innovation mindset that encourages a habit for your team to think differently and bring their ideas forward. People focus on what their leaders pay attention to. When you become an innovation evangelist, you’ll be amazed at what your team can create!

This future-oriented, collaborative approach not only empowers teams by nurturing a safe space for exploration but becomes the driving force for cutting-edge solutions that are built to last.

I find there is often confusion about creativity (ideas) and innovation - the translation of those ideas into practical delivery. We’re very good at the first and, often, bad at the second. I’m delivering it is about a whole organisation approach. Like a car without wheels, it won’t move forward if something is issuing, even if everything else is brilliant. Leadership and a stomach for change, a willingness to take calculated risks and to fail well, scope in budgets to do that, investing in staff development and genuinely listening to staff and giving recognition to everyone who deserves it all matter. Note that comes with a price and too often we don’t want to pay it, even though (if done well) the payback is much greater.
