Strong teaching credentials and a successful research program are highly valued. Aim for several years of experience at the post-secondary level, ideally in the discipline relevant to the associate dean position you're targeting.

Being employed in higher education, I find that our associate deans exhibit great leadership in administration; provide consistent, relevant communication to their peers and students; and are well equipped to manage the departments operations relating to recruitment, finance, and administration. They have developed these key skills while completing their bachelor and graduate degrees. Teaching in a university environment also provides them practical academic experience.

Work on projects with students to help then be successful in their community . Help them obtain the skills and knowledge to having good work habits and teach them to work with others.

When it comes to developing your skills, you can go to workshops, get a certififcate, or earn another degree but at the end of the day there is no substitute for actual experience. Raise your hand when opportunities are offered or (better yet) when you see a new project come online that you feel like you can learn from, volunteer to help. This will be something you can talk about in an interview.

Networking is vital to career advancement. When making new connections, I try to find things that I have in common with the person I want to meet and go from there. If they are willing, I ask if they have any time to talk about their career path. After some time when you two have developed a rapport, share you are looking for advancement and welcome any support or leads they can provide. I think of networking as a long game. People have invested years in developing their rolodex and are sometimes hesitant to vouch for someone they don't know very well. So prove you are worth the recommendation.

Rather, ask thought provoking questions that demonstrate you've done your research, ie. "I noticed last year there was an increase in enrollment. What strategies have you used to manage class size and/or other resources?" Also ask about the vision and expectations of the person in the role you want. When they answer, discuss how you fit those desired traits.

The first 6 months of being in your new position are extremely important for establishing credibility and showing value. I recommend curating at list of 10-20 people to meet and work through the list setting aside time to introduce yourself, learn about their role and their thoughts on the strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities within the institution. After speaking with enough people, you'll likely start to gather some common themes. From there, identify the low hanging fruit, and think about how you can make an impact in areas that are priority to your leadership.

Never chase a title. Chase the outcome the title warrants.

Devotion, Empathy, Access & Network (DEAN) makes up Associate Dean. We are not talking about academic & research qualifications perse. They are given & are basic hygiene factors. We are talking about attributes that differentiate a regular & clinical professor from associate dean. Such person should be devoted to the welfare of his fellow faculty members & students. Genuinely concerned about their progress, empathetic towards their situation & needs. The person who is vying for an Associate Dean role should also have access to resources outside academia like industry practitioners whom he / she can leverage for the benefit of students & college alike. Get involved in the strategic planning process of your department or institution. Show that you can think strategically and contribute to the long-term vision and goals of the academic unit. Also become involved in institutional governance by participating in committees, task forces, or advisory boards. This involvement not only demonstrates your commitment to the institution but also provides visibility among decision-makers. By actively participating in strategic planning and institutional governance, you not only position yourself as a valuable contributor but also increase your visibility and influence within the academic community. These actions can strengthen your candidacy for an Associate Dean position.

Hard work and leadership. Research the team you are going to be working with (not all colleges and not all programs in a college are equal). There are as many unwritten rules as there are documented policies so listen and learn.

Along with appropriate/required training, have at least one mentor, become immersed in the culture of the institution, AND demonstrate genuine care for those you serve. Most can be trained and learn the specifics of any job; however, who you are as a person, your Emotional Intelligence (EQ) maximizes one's overall effectiveness in a position.
