This type of leadership is often effective in situations that require stability, consistency, and structure. However, it can also have some drawbacks for your relationships. For example, transactional leadership can lead to a sense of dependency and compliance rather than autonomy and empowerment. It can also reduce creativity and innovation, as people may be reluctant to take risks or challenge the status quo. Furthermore, it can erode trust and loyalty due to a sense that people are only valued for their output, not their input or potential. Lastly, it can limit personal growth and development as people may not receive enough support or feedback to improve their skills or abilities.

2 Transformational leadership

Transformational leadership is based on the vision and values of the leader, inspiring and motivating others to achieve a common goal. This type of leadership can be effective in situations that require innovation, adaptation, and collaboration; however, it can also create a sense of pressure and stress as people may feel they have to constantly perform at a high level or meet unrealistic standards. Additionally, it can reduce accountability and clarity, erode authenticity and diversity, and limit feedback and learning. People may not have clear roles or responsibilities, may rely too much on the leader's direction, feel that they have to conform to the leader's vision or values, or may not receive enough constructive criticism or guidance.

3 Balancing transactional and transformational leadership

When it comes to transactional and transformational leadership styles, neither is inherently better or worse than the other; the key is to balance them according to the situation, the goal, and the people involved. To do this, assess the context and the needs of your team or partner, taking into account factors such as complexity, urgency, and uncertainty of the task, as well as the skills, motivation, and preferences of the people. Adapt your style accordingly -- use transactional leadership when structure, direction, and feedback are needed, and transformational leadership when creativity, engagement, and growth are desired. Communicate your rationale and expectations to others, inviting feedback and suggestions. Review and reflect on your outcomes and impacts regularly; evaluate how your style affected results, process, and relationships; identify what worked well; seek feedback from others; learn from experiences.

4 Developing your leadership style

Your leadership style is not static; it can change and evolve over time based on your personality, values, experiences, and goals. You can further develop your leadership style by learning from others, seeking feedback, and practicing new skills. To do this, observe and learn from other leaders you admire or respect. Analyze how they use transactional and transformational leadership styles. Ask for feedback from your team, peers, managers, or mentors on your leadership style to identify strengths and weaknesses. Experiment with different styles and techniques in different situations. For example, if you’re more transactional, try to be more transformational by sharing your vision or empowering others. If you’re more transformational, try to be more transactional by setting clear goals or providing feedback.
