I look for secondary sources related to my topic and look at footnotes and bibliographies to learn earlier pathways to information. There are online collections of finding aids like the Online Archive of California but you can look at WorldCat and find archival collections. Sometimes it is shocking how far information travels before landing in an archive, but most archivists work together to help donors find logical archives for material.
