Avoid using jargon or technical terms that may confuse or bore your audience. Instead, use stories, examples, or testimonials that demonstrate your skills and achievements. Have some business cards, brochures, or portfolios ready to hand out or share electronically.

3 Be proactive and friendly

Don't wait for people to come to you or rely on your booth or display to attract attention. Be proactive and friendly in approaching and engaging with others. Smile, make eye contact, and use open body language. Start with a genuine compliment, a common interest, or a relevant question. Listen actively and attentively to what they have to say and show interest and curiosity. Avoid interrupting, dominating, or arguing. Try to find out their needs, challenges, or goals and how you can help or collaborate with them.

4 Follow up and follow through

Networking at trade shows does not end when the event is over. You need to follow up and follow through with the contacts you made and the promises you gave. Send a thank-you email or message within 24 hours of meeting someone and remind them of who you are and what you discussed. Include a call to action or a next step, such as scheduling a meeting, sending a proposal, or sharing a resource. Keep in touch until you establish a solid relationship or a mutually beneficial outcome. Don't forget to thank the organizers, sponsors, and speakers of the trade show as well.

5 Evaluate and improve

Finally, you need to evaluate and improve your networking performance and results. Review your goals and objectives and see if you met or exceeded them. Track your leads, referrals, or opportunities and measure your return on investment. Identify your strengths and weaknesses and seek feedback from others. Learn from your mistakes and celebrate your successes. Apply what you learned to your future networking efforts and keep expanding your network and your horizons.
