Being in the automotive sales and service industry for a few years I would recommend: 1. Always check on what kind of vehicles they specialise in. Try to visit a place where the particular brand/type of vehicle is often worked on. This is primarily because they would have the tools, skills, and experience to work on similar models. 2. A good service advisor/mechanic would always explain the issue in a way a layman can understand. 3. These days online reviews are easily available. Do check on them too.

As I work in an automotive shop here in my region, and have worked in other shops around the country as well, I would say that the best way to find a great repair facility is by word of mouth. Some of the best , most profitable businesses in my area do not even advertise. For example we do not have any marketing materials whatsoever. Word of mouth means you can trust that the shop made enough of an impression on someone for them to go out of their way to remember to recommend to you.

If your vehicle is covered under manufacturer warranty, ensure it is being taken to an authorised service center. Failing to do so can void the warranty of the car. This also includes accessory fitting like head unit, auxiliary lighting etc. If doubtful, check with the manufacturer's website to ensure that the service provider is authorised.

Always ensure the right parts are being used for the repair. Ensure to check if the parts being used are from a recognised manufacturer. Cross-check with the service provider about the options available in case of a part change. Be aware of the fake and non-genuine cheap replicas available in the market. Trying to save a few dollars on a sub-standard part might cost you a lot more in the long run.
