Journalism is also a really important tool for getting the work of researchers and data analysts into an open access format in the public domain, as long as the newspaper or publication it exists in does not require a subscription/have a paywall. Much fewer people outside of the research sphere can afford to access top research journals and articles, meaning they likely will never read your research or be able to have their lives improved by its findings, but journalism provides a way of reaching these people. This adds a high level of responsibility to journalists though, not only to report accurately and without bias but to highlight under-researched topics, issues and scholars.
