When working with resistant physicians, I experienced that to break trough their barriers you need to provide them with something to help them. Maybe a nice leaflet to handover to patients to explain their treatment/upcoming clinical trial, or a checklist for study visits, or maybe just novel data. As soon as they see that you can help them, they will be less reluctant to share information with you, and you may even become their "person-to-call" whenever they need something.

Trained facilitation can play a crucial role. Here are key strategies : Facilitating open dialogue: Creating a structured yet open environment helps ensure all voices are heard, including those who may be resistant. Clarifying shared objectives: As a facilitator, I guide the group to refocus on mutual goals, such as patient care or organizational success, rather than individual differences. This helps move the conversation from conflict to collaboration. Leveraging data in context: Presenting evidence in a facilitative manner by connecting it directly to the physicianâs concerns and framing it as part of a broader conversation makes it easier for them to consider alternative approaches without feeling challenged.

Resistant physicians, itâs like trying to open a locked door without the key (and theyâre holding it). Start with psychological safety, build trust by listening to their concerns without judgment. Use cognitive diversity to your advantage by bringing in different perspectives, especially from multi-generational team members, to highlight fresh approaches. Keep motivation high by aligning on a common goal: better patient outcomes. Breaking through barriers takes empathy and collaboration, but when you do, even the toughest cases can turn into shared victories!
