El llibre que teniu a les mans és el resultat del treball d'un equip de recerca coordi-nat pels professors Santiago Izquierdo (UPF) i Gemma Rubí (UAB) desplegat per tot Catalunya. El principal objectiu perseguit ha estat esbrinar els orígens històrics del republicanisme nacionalista o del nacionalisme republicà a partir de la formació del Centre Nacionalista Republicà (CNR), del qual sabíem que existia a Barcelona, però n'ignoràvem la presència a la resta de Catalunya. Amb la seva lectura, el lector es farà bona idea del per què el catalanisme i el republicanisme acabaren confluint en les si-gles d'Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya, el partit hegemònic a Catalunya durant la Segona República. A més, acabarà entenent el per què el catalanisme polític és plural i per què des de principi del segle XX adoptà una vena republicana indiscutible.

Aquest article pretén tractar una problemàtica escassament analitzada en la historiografia catalana: la lenta transició del liberalisme a la democràcia. Aquest fenomen s'analitza a través d'un estudi de cas, l'univers polític de la ciutat de Manresa, que considerem com el prototipus de ciutat mitjana del teixit urbà de la Catalunya de la Restauració. L'estudi empíric realitzat en aquest marc local ens permet definir un model de transició de la política de notables a la política de masses, extrapolable a d'altres ciutats de grandària similar. Aquest model conjuga diferents elements, entre els quals cal destacar: el progrés del vot representatiu; el desenvolupament d'una política competitiva i d'un cert pluralisme polític; la capacitat mobilitzadora del catolicisme polític i del republicanisme, i la importància de les relacions clientelars i del sorgiment d'un clientelisme de nova volada, associat als interessos dels partits.

Resumen: Pocos meses antes de la muerte de Franco, Antoni Padrós (Terrassa, 1937), uno de los artistas más reputados de la escena underground catalana, emprende la realización de Shirley Temple Story, un largometraje –como es habitual en su autor, completamente autoproducido– en el que el cineasta arremete, entre otras cosas, contra el imaginario iconográfico de un régimen cuyo máximo representante se está lentamente apagando. El rodaje termina en 1976, al comienzo del proceso de transición. Shirley Temple Story –que, una vez montada, alcanzará un metraje de casi cuatro horas– supone una de las películas que mejor reflejan el clima de desorientación colectiva de aquel convulso periodo histórico.

Abstract: A few months before Franco's death, Antoni Padrós (Terrassa, 1937), one of the most appreciated artists of the Catalan underground scenery, starts filming Shirley Temple Story. This feature film (self-produced, as always) is used by Padrós to attack, among other things, the iconographic popular unconscious whose highest exponent is slowly dying. The shooting will end in 1976, at the beginning of the transition process. Shirley Temple Story (almost four hours long, in its final edited version) represents one of the films that best reflect the atmosphere of general disorientation of that frantic period in history.

The gestation of the project was long, and in it Gaudí followed a path similar to the temple of the Sagrada Família: a journey full of attempts, of constant revisions, looking for the global conception of the work. The church separates itself from the small, complete world of the colony; it is not related to the street network that organizes it; it does not occupy the square or any central space. The church crowns, dominates, watches, in a different place: in the middle of the forest, mysterious and sacred place. A slightly winding path guides the ascent of the faithful to the temple, on a route similar to that of the picturesque gardens, but also that of the Greek temples. In a way, the church defines the acropolis of the colony: both a place of defense and a center of worship. If construction had been completed, its tall towers would have competed with the factory chimneys.

Publicat a L' Avenç, 305 (setembre 2005), p. 29-35] Amb una envejable capacitat de síntesi, Josep Pla va escriure que Jaume Vicens i Vives havia estat «un home de la postguerra, potser l'intel·lectual d'aquest país que se'n féu una idea més completa i directa». L'afirmació, més enllà del que pugui tenir d'elogi obituari, hauria de ser considerada seriosament. De fet, la trajectòria vital i intel·lectual de Vicens, que la Guerra Civil i les seves conseqüències havien partit pel mig, es veurà abocada, a partir de l'ensulsiada del nazisme el 1945, a un replantejament de la seva producció historiogràfica, que s'orientarà des d'aleshores a la reflexió sobre les causes del conflicte civil i, simultàniament, a mirar d'assentar les bases d'un redreçament polític.

This paper analyzes the history of bilateral relations between Catalan nationalist and anarcho-syndicalist movements in Barcelona from the Revolution of 1868 to the Spanish Civil War. Drawing from historical literature, party pamphlets, periodicals, and memoirs, the paper primarily explores the idea of conceptual frontier as the method through which both the Catalan nationalists and the anarcho-syndicalists constructed a collective civic identity wholly alternative to national Spain associated with backwardness and political oppressiveness. For the Catalan nationalists, the source of imagining Barcelona as the capital of national Catalonia distinct from Spain was the history, especially the medieval past of the thalassocratic Crown of Aragon. As for the anarcho-syndicalists, they imagined Barcelona as the heart and frontier of a whole new world not only unassociated with, but opposing all nationalisms based on the proletarian social experience and its distinct cosmography of the working-class barrios. Highlighting points of collision and common influences such as religion, cosmopolitan urban culture, international exposure, the paper concludes with the total rupture of Barcelona's political landscape with the Francoist victory in the Spanish Civil War, reflecting upon the wider legacy of the bilateral relationship between the two movements that most importantly shaped Barcelona's 20th century.

RESumEN El origen de este artículo reside en una comunicación que presenté al Congreso Internacional " Moder-nizar España " (1898-1914) que se celebró en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid en abril de 2006. El enfoque utilizado es el de la historia social de la política y se centra en el análisis de las prácticas políticas y de las actitudes adoptadas por las élites partidistas catalanas a lo largo del régimen político de la Restauración. Ante todo, se insiste en la capacidad de resistencia de las prácticas caciquiles que se percibe a partir de 1900, a pesar de la descomposición precoz del turno dinástico en Cataluña, y del progreso imparable de la autentificación del sufragio. A este nuevo caciquismo lo hemos llamado " ca-ciquismo renovado o reconvertido " que convivió con la movilización electoral y el pluralismo político, elementos propios de una politización democrática embrionaria, y que se apoyó en las organizaciones de intereses que proporcionaron votos a cambio de favores y de prebendas. AbSTRACT This paper has its origin in an essay presented at the International Congress: Modernizing Spain (1898-1914), which was held at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in April 2006. The approach taken here is that of the social history of politics, focusing on the analysis of political practices and attitudes adopted by the elites leading Catalan parties during the political regime of the Bourbon Restoration. Special emphasis is placed on the resilience of caciquism practices noticeable from 1900 despite the early disintegration of the system known as Turno Pacífico and the unstoppable progress of vote authen-tication. This new caciquism is referred to as " renewed or restructured caciquism " in the paper, since it coexisted with electoral mobilization and political pluralism –characteristic elements of embryonic democratic politicization– and was underpinned by interest groups providing votes in return for privileges and favours.
