AI-generated Abstract
This paper explores the concept of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament, highlighting the distinction between the understanding of the Spirit prior to and following the New Testament revelation of the Trinity. It discusses various interpretations from contemporary exegesis, contrasting Old Testament references to God's Spirit as a manifestation of divine will with the later understanding of the Spirit as a distinct person within the Trinity. The paper also considers arguments that challenge the strict separation between the Old and New Testament perceptions of the Spirit, pointing to specific texts that may imply a more nuanced understanding.

The Greek word for SPIRIT is pneûma. It is found around 385 times in the New Testament texts. However, nowhere does it appear as THE Holy Spirit. Nowhere in the Old Testament does it appear either as THE Holy Spirit. If the word THE does not appear in a Bible verse you cannot add one without changing the meaning. “Let’s eat grandma is very different from “Let’s eat, grandma.”

A more dispassionate assessment of this Biblical material is today in Christian cireles gradually overcoming the previous polemical polarities which reflected primary interest in denominational self justification. The many materials produced by Biblical Scholars and the interest and concern shown by the different episcopal conferences, the .clergy in Holy Spirit Ministries, the near mushrooming of Christian Charismatic renewal groups, and maddening multitude of evangelical and Pentecostal gr...
