This study compares two on-line texts reporting the same news. This study is meant to find out a possibility of the both news alignments seen from the angle of critical discourse analysis of Sara Mills which looks at the perspective of feminism, and the power relations implied in the texts reflected by the words, phrases, and clauses used. This as well studies the accuracy of the equivalence of transferred messages to their source text, and what social and cultural aspects behind the discourse strategy are applied by the authors in the news. The findings revealed that both the original and the translated news tend to represent woman positively. Seen from the micro features used, woman was positioned proportionally in the texts. Woman does not only take the object position, but also the subject position. However, some choice of words refers to relatively downgrading which still reflects the man world, especially in the translated version where power relations is clearly influ...

Women are frequently underrepresented in the media and its content gives more favors to men. The discussion of the portrayal of women in news media cannot be separated from the values and ideology of a journalist. This paper aims at investigating the position of the subject, object, and reader, also identifying the ideology of the author on the news article. This research applied the descriptive qualitative approach. The data source of the research is in the form of vocabularies, phrases, or sentences that reflected Sara Mills’ model in a news text entitled Indonesian Woman Sends Poisoned Satay to Ex-boyfriend, Ends up Killing Delivery Man's Son instead obtained from asiaone.com published in May 04, 2021. This paper investigates gender related discourse in headlines of some famous daily newspapers in the USA. Discourse in this case refers to the entire set of social gender relations seen through the media. Based on an interdisciplinary approach to the problem, which includes both cultural and critical studies, the purpose of this research is to offer a critical review of the basic media strategies used in discursive representation of gender relations within the society. Through the critical discourse analysis (CDA) of the data collected from the Internet, the author is to describe the discursive reproduction of social power reflected in the newspaper headlines.
This study investigates the language of Moroccan popular newspapers to discover whether men and women are represented differently. The general hypothesis that the study starts from is that there is a difference in the way the two genders are depicted in these newspapers. By adopting a Critical Linguistic approach, theaim is to explore the linguistic mechanism deployed in order to see where areas of uneven treatment reside. This will mainly be achieved through quantitatively analysing headlines as well as newspaper core texts, to discover whether their discourse displays a meaningful pattern at the level of the experiential function. This research distinguishes itself from most of the Critical Linguistic studies dealing with gender-related differences in language in that it goes beyond qualitatively evaluating newspaper texts, i.e. it does not solely rely on interpreting some particular linguistic structures in order to establish their significance in the discourse. It doesalso quantify the use of these linguistic features used in the news reports, to find out whether they create a socially meaningful pattern, hence providing statistical evidence of the way theyportray men and women in the newspapers under study.

The current paper deals with the sociolinguistic analysis of mass media discourse deployment and its gender specificity. It reveals sociocultural factors and psychological peculiarities affecting speech generating mental activity of male and female authors of British news texts as representatives of the native English-speaking community. The paper also touches upon the differences in male and female perception of events and their reflection in gender-neutral texts giving rise to feminine and masculine forms of writing. An attempt has been made to classify and describe linguistic parameters of newspaper texts written by male and female authors. The authors pay special attention to the gender analysis of structural, contents and stylistic aspects of news texts. The proposed matrix for identifying gender of a news text author has been validated by the results of the sociolinguistic experiment providing some insights into gender specificity of the mass media texts on various levels of language.

A corpus-based analysis was carried out with the aim of revealing dissimilarities in newspaper discourse in Spanish and English which can both reflect and be due to differences in the use of cultural patterns. For this purpose, two small corpora consisting of the news articles covering an event of global importance were compiled. This event was the world food summit organized by the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization and the corpora cover all the texts which were published on the opening day of the summit (3 June 2008). One corpus consists of all the articles appearing in the electronic version of El País newspaper and the other contains all the articles from the electronic version of the Guardian.

Translation study is no longer seen as the product where the analysis stays on the strategy and method. Further, the process can be analyzed through both the source text and the target text. What can be seen here is the factors influences the translator in translating or reproducing the text. Translation study has found its close relationship with Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). There are many studies conducted by previous researcher who have successfully liked translation study and CDA. Therefore this research also tries to prove the link between translation study and CDA. Its focus is to determine the translator’s ideology in translating news headlines. The researcher randomly took 20 news headlines from B2B, a news website, in order to get the authentic data. The news headlines taken as the data are translated by one translator. This analysis is based on the first model of method proposed by Al-Hejin adopted from Norman Fairclough. The finding shows that the translator transmi...

This study investigates the use of gendered lexical items and collocates to deconstruct the patriarchal social system of Pakistan with the help of corpus tools. Media frame the mind and thinking of people with its repetitive announcements. Women being a part of the society are also part of media news but they are underreported by reporters and editors as most of the news are male-filtered news. Pakistani English newspapers are one of the popular sources of getting information across Pakistan. The local social system and male dominating mindset have influenced all types of media in Pakistan. It is observed that like all other fields of life, women are marginalized in Pakistani English newspapers too. It is hypothesized that male are over represented as compared to female and women related news are written by female writers and reporters. A corpus of 270 Pakistani English Newspapers has been selected from The News International, The Dawn and Daily Times with 90 articles from each paper. A corpus-based analysis has been carried out to identify gender discrimination and gender stereotypes in Pakistani society. All collocate of women and men are kept in attention in this work. The results reveal that women are represented as a minority and marginalized victims by male dominating society. On the contrary, the modern writers raise their voices to support and highlight the role of women in society. The study is the first attempt of its kind for an amalgam of corpus-based and CDA approaches.

Women have traditionally been defined in journalistic studies as the 'unaccessed voice group' due to their underrepresentation in most media coverage, a fact commonly described in linguistics as 'symbolic annihilation' (Caldas-Coulthard 2002; Armstrong 2004). Although many scholars state that linguistic stereotypes have been weakening over time, there is a prevailing view that women are still experiencing linguistic discrimination in the age of digital storytelling. This paper discusses gender inequality by means of an in-depth study of females as sources of information in newspaper discourse, based on a corpus of 68 online news items published in four broadsheet British and Spanish newspapers: The Times, The Guardian, El Mundo and El País. The research mainly focuses on the possible relation between the gender of the source and that of the news reporter, as well as the tendencies in the depiction of female sources in reporting segments. The analysis reveals a continuing underrepresentation of women, though less noticeable in the Spanish news group. Contrary to possible expectations, both corpora coincide in defining female sources on a professional basis. The results also suggest that the predominance of male sources of information, rather than being tied to the 'familiarity' criterion, is institutionally biased.
