bibliography is much more than a mere list of books; it portrays major developments and trends in the concerned subject and gives an idea of the various shifts and waves in the intellectual history of a particular field. The Holy Qur'ān, the Scripture of Islam, has remained the focus of intellectual engagement throughout history right from its revelation. This has resulted in a rich corpus of the Qur'anic scholarship spread over a range of subfields including translations of the Qur'ān in different languages, commentaries of the Qur'an, Qur'anic lexicon, principles of the Qur'anic exegesis, Qur'anic sciences, etc. During the modern period, the Western imperialism paved the way for globalization of English language which, in turn, has culminated in the proliferation of literature on Islam in English. The Qur'anic scholarship in English has not only superseded other languages, including Arabic, the language of the Qur'ān, it has also flooded rather, in a sense, monopolized the academia. The constant flow of English translations of the Qur'ān, especially by non-Muslims, is the most striking indicator of the market forces prompting intellectual production. Though the political economy of this knowledge production is yet to be seriously studied, it is beyond the scope of the present review; the immediate concern is reviewing the present book listing the academic research on the Qur'ān in English with brief annotations. The book under review aptly titled as Academic Research on the Qur'an: A Critical Bibliography is an important reference work on the Qur'an. The bibliographer, Sajid Shaffi, Research Scholar in Islamic Studies at AMU, Aligarh, has listed 490 theses (364 doctoral and 124 masters) on different aspects, themes and sub-fields of
Abstrak: Tren Baru Studi Sejarah dan Sastra Terhadap al-Qur'an. Abstract: Two works published by English and American scholars in 1977, Patricia Crone and Michael Cook, Hagarism and John Wansbrough Quranic Studies: Sources and Methods of Scriptural Interpretation revolutionized both historical and literary studies of the Qur'an and early Islam. Neither work achieved significant agreement among western scholars of Islam and met with strong protest from both western and Muslim scholars. Rather than focusing on these two works, this article explores some recent Western scholarship in their wake and attempts to weigh the relationship between historical and literary approaches to the Qur'an, strongly affirming that neither are threats to Islam. The artificiality of the distinction of literary and historical is also an important argument. In the end there is significant potential for a creative conversation between Muslims and non-Muslims about the character and message of Qur'an that attends to efflorescence of work by a wide range of scholars writing in western languages in the past thirty years.

Allah revealed that the complete code of life for all mankind is to seek guidance as mentioned "The month of Ramadan is that in which was revealed the Qur'an a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion." (1) It is further stated: "Guidance to those who are Al-Muttaqeen (2) [the pious and religious persons who fear Allah much (abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden). Furthermore, the following verses "[This is] a blessed Book which we have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded." And "Then do they not reflect upon the Qur'an? Or are there locks upon [their] hearts?", also remind us to understand, and act upon by reflecting upon its verses to seek guidance. The scholars have been trying to facilitate the understanding of the Qur'an since its revelation took place and preserved. This study tries to explore the efforts of scholars who have collected the meaning of Qur'anic-words, which is the first step towards understanding of the Qur'an. In short, this collection is not only focusing on and analyzing the contributions of the scholars regarding LUGHAT-UL-QUR'AN, MAJAZ-UL-QUR'AN and GHARIB-UL-QUR'AN, but also gathered the contribution of scholars regarding indexing of the QUR'AN.

The existence of academic works concerning the genre of Qur'anic studies in the west is a sign of grave interest of western scholars in the Quran. In twenty first century, an immense increase in production of academic works on the Qur'ān can be witnessed. The significant point is that despite the presence of the vast corpus of western scholarship on the Qur'ān, it is not generally accepted in the Muslim world. The Muslim opinion is that despite the claims of objectivity, the Western scholars see Islam with their own lens and perceptions. In fact, many western intellectuals have admitted this reality in their writings. It is also argued that the so-called academic study of the Qur'ān is a presentation of the old views in new guise and appearance of the old wine in a new bottle. On the contrary, the western scholars claim for the rise of objectivity and scientific approach in their studies. The encyclopedia of the Qur'ān, being a major production of the 21 st century has been the focus of discussion in this regard. This article intends to analyze the scientific approach in the above mentioned work by highlighting some of its features.

Claude Gilliot (b. 1940) stands at the forefront of Qur’anic and especiallytafsīr studies in today’s western academic world. His expertise extends alsointo other Islamic fields, notably theology, and his well-known encyclopediclearning and bibliographic erudition are as striking as the depth and breadthof his scholarly corpus and the sharp wit that all who know him have come toexpect in their encounters with him. The book under review is a fitting tributefrom twenty colleagues, nine writing in English, eight in French, and three inGerman across several fields of Islamic studies. The book’s first section (pp. 3-130), “Authors,” consists of seven contributions, each of which treats one Muslim or European non-Muslim author ortext, four of which pertain to Qur’anic studies and three to other areas. Threeof the four Qur’anic contributions discuss different interpretive approachesthrough elucidation of exemplary texts. Pierre Larcher offers a close analysisof four Qur’anic phrases or senten...

The current paper aims to highlight the contributions of contemporary Muslim scholars and Islamic institutions to the study of Quran manuscripts through an initial bibliographic survey. It stands out as the first study to present these contributions, emphasizing their roles and any reservations expressed about the study of ancient Quran manuscripts. The research identifies significant challenges in this field, such as the scarcity of previous studies, limited bibliographic surveys, and the lack of Quranic research centers in the Islamic world. The central question addressed is the extent and breadth of these contributions and whether Muslim scholars have faced difficulties in studying Quran manuscripts. By using statistical and analytical methods, this research provides a preliminary overview of the efforts of contemporary Muslim scholars and Islamic institutions. The findings demonstrate that significant efforts have been made by these scholars, postgraduate students, and institutions, showing no reluctance to conduct analytical studies on Quran manuscripts. Consequently, the authors of this paper recommend establishing specialized center dedicated to Quran manuscript studies in the Islamic world.
As the center of Islamic civilization, the Qur'an receives numerous intellectual responses both from Muslim and Western scholars within history. One of the prominent names of Western scholars who deals very much with the Qur'an is Jane Dammen McAuliffe. This article discusses the ontological view of the Qur'an of Jane Dammen McAuliffe, within a context of a new growing interest of western scholarship to see the Qur'an. Applying phenomenological and analytical methods of analysis, the articles ends in conclusions: [1] Muslims' views on the Qur'an tend to be theologically oriented, while the Westerns have resulted some polemical conclusions [2] however a new growing interest in the West, in which Jane Dammen McAuliffe belongs to, sees the Qur'an as a scripture, that emphasizes the importance of relation between the text and human's belief in the text; the Qur'an and Muslims.
